Bilich, Cline, Schmitt, Raihill et al's CAMBINA (Ire) (Hawk Wing) was

hampered in her American debut in the January 22 Sweet Life S. at Santa Anita,

but the Jeff Bonde trainee had better luck on the same downhill turf course in

Monday's $100,000

La Habra

S. (G3). Closing furiously in deep stretch for new rider Garrett Gomez, the

chestnut sophomore just got up to nip Quiet Oasis (Ire) (Oasis Dream [GB]) at

the wire. The 3-1 second choice paid $8.80, $4.40 and $3.60.

Cambina was settled dead last in the 11-filly field as the front-running

Dawnie Macho (Macho Uno) sped through fractions of :21 and :44. Quiet Oasis, who

had raced within striking range early, rallied past the fading pacesetter in the

stretch. Surging clear, Quiet Oasis looked on her way to the winner's circle,

but by the time she reached six furlongs in 1:07 3/5, Cambina was suddenly

erupting on the outside. Despite clinging to her left lead, Cambina found enough

momentum in the final yards to inflict a heartbreaker on Quiet Oasis. Her final

time for about 6 1/2 furlongs on the firm turf was 1:13 3/5.

"She galloped down the hill really well," Gomez said, "and when we

crossed the dirt, we didn't have much ground to make up. She's small,

but she's got a lotta heart and she's got a heckuva turn of foot.

"I thought we were gonna win easy, but that filly inside of us (Quiet Oasis)

kept fighting back. I thought I got the bob, but she's so small and when they're

so far apart, it's really tough to tell who got to the wire first."

"There was enough pace in the race that we thought she'd get a good setup,

and basically, she did," Bonde said. "She's probably a better miler than a

sprinter, but there haven't been many opportunities here, and we were hopeful

that we could get up (at about 6 1/2 furlongs)."

Quiet Oasis had two lengths to spare over third-placer Cathy's Crunches (West

Acre), with 2-1 favorite Cloneylass (Ire) (Verglas [Ire]) reporting home fourth.

Rigoletta (Concerto), who was appearing for the first time since capturing the

October 3 Oak Leaf S. (G1), chased the pace before tiring to fifth in her turf

debut. True Way of Grace (Yes It's True), She'll Heir (Wildcat Heir), Dawnie

Macho, Teddy's Promise (Salt Lake), Advantage Player (Bernstein) and Latin

Lashes (Stormy Atlantic) completed the order of finish, while Frizette S. (G1)

heroine A Z Warrior (Bernardini), Sweet Life winner Bloemer Girl (Bertrando) and

Hout Bay (Harlan's Holiday) were all scratched.

Initially based with Tommy Stack in Ireland, Cambina broke her maiden at

Killarney second time out last summer, and two starts later, she landed a

nursery at the same course. She wrapped up her juvenile campaign with a

runner-up effort to the well-regarded Chrysanthemum (Danehill Dancer) in the

September 12 Flame of Tara S. at the Curragh. When making her first start for

her new connections in the Sweet Life, she was steadied hard at the top of the

stretch, but managed to improve her position late for sixth. Jockey Russell Baze

lodged a claim of foul to no avail. With this first stakes win to her credit,

Cambina sports a mark of 7-3-1-0, $102,936.

Bred by Carradale Ltd. in the Emerald Isle, Cambina is the first foal from

the unraced Peintre Celebre mare Await, who is herself a half-sister to

Oceanside S. winner Lightning Hit (Ire) (Orpen) and French Group 3-placed

Blasket Island (Kenmare). This is the family of Group 3 scorers Regime (Golan)

and Title Roll (Tate Gallery) and multiple Group 2-placed stakes victress Salut

d'Amour (Ire) (Danehill Dancer).
