Numbers rise at Tattersalls February

Last updated: 2/3/11 5:02 PM

The consignment from Juddmonte Farms proved the highlight of the Tattersalls
February Sale with the four-year-old filly FULL STEAM (Oasis Dream [GB]) selling for 160,000
guineas — the second highest price for a filly in training in the history of
the sale —
whilst the sale turnover, average and median all showed increases compared with
2010.

A total of 164 lots were sold for 1,672,300 guineas, a 69 percent rise on
the corresponding session in 2010. The average and median rose 51 percent
and 29 percent, respectively, to 10,197 guineas and 4,500 guineas.

The four-year-old filly Full Steam topped the one-day sale when
knocked down to agent Tony Nerses for 160,000 guineas. Winner of a conditions race at Chantilly,
she next took her place in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches
(Fr-G1) last year, where she finished last after being severely
interfered with. The Andre Fabre-trained filly is out of the Gone West mare
Western Appeal, who is herself a full sister to multiple highweight and Group 1
winner ZAFONIC as well as Group 3 scorer Zamindar.

Full Steam entered the ring as Lot No. 174 and was knocked down to Nerses on behalf of his long-term client
Saleh Al Homaizi after he saw off the efforts of BBA Ireland’s Patrick Cooper.

“I came without a real plan in mind, and walked away with her,” Nerses
laughed. “She will be a welcome addition to the stud — she has a decent pedigree
which is hard to get into and she is well-rated.

“I have not got a mate in mind for her, but she was easily the stand-out to
me — she is a very pretty mare.”

The 15-strong draft from Khaled Abdullah’s Juddmonte Farms realized a
total of 352,200 guineas.

Following straight on from Full Steam was Park Express S. (Ire-G3) winner POLLEN
(Orpen), who was consigned from Tommy Stack’s Thomastown Castle Stables.
The six-year-old daughter of On Air (Chief Singer) went to Lizzie Lyons, assistant to Irish bloodstock agent John McCormack,
for 114,000 guineas.

“She has been bought for an undisclosed client,” Lyons reported. “John is in
Ireland and I have been lucky enough to come over for him. Pollen was the one
we came for.”

The mare’s assistant trainer Fozzy Stack was on hand to offer his
congratulations to the winning bidder.

“Pollen has been a great servant to us,” Stack said. “She was tough, had a
great temperament, she was a pleasure to train. I hope she is as lucky for her
new owners.”

Round Tower S. (Ire-G3) winner DINGLE VIEW (Mujadil), who was unable to be
offered through the ring due a documentation problem, was sold privately to
Danish trainer Bent Olsen for 80,000 guineas. The three-year-old lass was consigned from trainer David Evans’ Ty-Derlwyn Farm and bought by
Olsen on behalf of Swedish owner Lasse Sjønuld’s Stall Cambra.

“It is always good to make a positive start to the year and the 2011
Tattersalls February Sale has produced improved figures across the board and
lively international trade from start to finish,” Tattersalls Chairman
Edmond Mahony commented. “Turnover, average and median
have all made significant gains over last year and the clearance rate of 79
percent is the highest ever at this sale.

“Another positive indicator was the 160,000 guineas Juddmonte Farms sale
topper Full Steam. Not only was she the second-highest priced filly ever sold at
the February Sale, but also a clear demonstration of the enduring demand for
quality bloodstock which has been the feature of today’s trade. Without doubt
the market remains testing and we all continue to face plenty of challenges, but
the crowd of buyers at Tattersalls today should be a source of encouragement for
the industry.”
