Hip No. 265, a colt by Flatter consigned by Eisaman Equine, agent, went to
Bob Baffert, agent for $925,000 to top the second and final session of the Ocala
Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2011 March Sale of Selected 2-Year-Olds in Training.
The dark bay colt, whose quarter in :20 3/5 was co-fastest at the distance
during Saturday’s under tack session, is out of Silence Please (Quiet American),
making him a half-brother to stakes winner Sky Music (Sky Mesa).
SWEET DREAMS (Bernardini), a dark bay filly consigned by Niall Brennan
Stables, agent, as Hip 320, brought the highest price for a filly and the second
highest price of the sale when Lane’s End Bloodstock posted the winning bid of
$500,000. Out of the unraced Turbo Dream (Unbridled), the juvenile lass is a
half-sister to multiple Grade 1 heroine Dream Rush (Wild Rush). Sweet Dreams
worked an eighth in :10 2/5 at the under uack show.
Hip 329, a filly by Medaglia d’Oro who worked an eighth in :10 1/5 at the
under tack show, went to Mark Casse, agent, for $450,000. Consigned by Eddie
Woods, agent, the dark bay lass is out of the winning User History (Mr.
Prospector) and counts as her second dame User Friendly (GB) (Slip Anchor), who
captured the 1992 Epsom Oaks (Eng-G1), Irish Oaks (Ire-G1), Yorkshire Oaks
(Eng-G1) and St. Leger S. (Eng-G1) while running second in that same year’s Prix
de l’Arc de Triomphe (Fr-G1).
Jack Sims went to $400,000 for Hip 371, a Smart Strike colt consigned by
Excel Bloodstock (Bruno DeBerdt and Rudy Delguidice), agent. The dark bay, who
is out of multiple Grade 2-placed Aspen Tree (Holy Bull) and can trace back to
champion handicap mare Tempted (*Half Crown), worked an eighth in :10 3/5 at the
under tack show.
Hip 317, a colt by War Front consigned by Parrish Farms, agent, went to
Steven W. Young, agent, for $375,000. The bay colt, who worked a quarter in :21
1/5 at the under tack show, is out of True Gritz (Yes It’s True). His third dam
is Long Legend (Reviewer), who is responsible for producing Grade 3 winner and
top sire Mr. Greeley (Gone West). Long Legend is also the third dam of champion
and Kentucky Derby (G1) hero Street Sense (Street Cry [Ire]).
For the session, 121 horses grossed $14,983,000, a jump of 55.4 percent
compared with last year’s second session total of $9,640,000 for 83 horses. The
average price was $123,826, a rise of 6.6 percent from $116,145 a year ago,
while the median price was $87,000, a gain of 7.9 percent compared with $80,000
in 2010. The buyback percentage was 19.8 percent; it was 27.8 percent last year.
For the entire sale, 244 horses sold for a total of $25,563,000, an increase
of 43.9 percent when compared with 167 horses grossing $17,766,000 in 2010. The
average registered a slight decline of 1.5 percent, falling from $106,383 to
$104,786, while the median price dropped 6.7 percent, from $75,000 to $70,000.
The buyback percentage was 23.9 percent; it was 29.5 percent last year.
