Uncle Mo, ‘All Others’ will likely draw heavy support in
Pool 2 of Derby Future Wager
With the 2011 debut of Repole Stable’s UNCLE MO (Indian Charlie), the
unbeaten 2010 two-year-old champion, set for this weekend, a strong effort by
the champion could push the Todd Pletcher-trained colt into the position of
overall favorite in the second betting of three betting pools in Churchill
Downs’ 2011 Kentucky Derby Future Wager (KDFW), which opens its three-day run at
noon (ET) on Friday.
Churchill Downs oddsmaker Mike Battaglia’s morning line odds for KDFW Pool 2
indicate it would be no surprise if Uncle Mo (#23) emerged as the favorite in
the pool’s 24 betting interests. Battaglia listed the mutuel field (#24), which
includes all three-year-olds other than the pool’s 23 individual horses, as the
3-1 favorite and Uncle Mo, the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) winner, as a close
7-2 second choice.
Next in the Pool 2 morning line are Fountain of Youth (G2) winner SOLDAT (War
Front) (#17) at 8-1; San Vicente (G2) winner THE FACTOR (War Front) (#21) and
Holy Bull (G3) winner DIALED IN (Mineshaft) (#5), both at 10-1; and unbeaten
BRETHREN (Distorted Humor) (#4) and Remsen (G2) winner TO HONOR AND SERVE
(Bernardini) (#22) are both listed at 15-1.
Uncle Mo was the overall second choice at 7-2 in February’s opening pool, but
was a clear favorite among its 23 individual horses. The mutuel field, or “all
others,” was the 2-1 overall favorite at 2-1 in the Feb. 18-20 pool. “All
others” has been the KDFW Pool 1 choice every year since the bet’s debut in
1999.
Pool 2 betting begins at noon on Friday and concludes at 6 p.m. on Sunday.
The pool will end 30 minutes prior to the close of betting on the companion
Kentucky Oaks Future Wager, which also opens Friday at noon. KDFW Pool 2
mutuel payouts on Kentucky Derby Day, May 7, will be determined by the odds in
place at Sunday’s close of betting at North American racetracks and off-track
betting facilities and TwinSpires.com and other advance deposit wagering
outlets.
The Kentucky Derby Future Wager provides fans with opportunities to wager on
potential contenders for the 137th Kentucky Derby (G1) at odds that could be
much more attractive than those available on race day. It offers win and exacta
wagering, and all bets are $2 minimum wagers. No refunds will be made on any
wager made during a KDFW pool. If it is determined during any pool that an
individual horse has suffered an illness, injury or other circumstance that
would prevent the betting interest from competing in Kentucky Derby, wagering on
the horse will be suspended immediately.
Uncle Mo is scheduled to make his 2011 debut, also his first start since his
easy Breeders’ Cup victory at Churchill Downs in early November, during this
weekend’s Derby Future betting. The champion is being pointed toward Saturday’s
Timely Writer S. at Gulfstream Park, but will opt for the Tampa Bay Derby (G3)
at Tampa Bay Downs on the same afternoon if the Timely Writer doesn’t fill. Sam
F. Davis (G3) winner Brethren, who is also trained by Pletcher, is confirmed for
the Tampa Bay Derby.
Three busy days of betting KDFW Pool 1 by Kentucky Derby fans across North
America pumped a near-record $592,492 into its win and exacta pools. The 2011
Pool 1 betting total is the second-largest single pool total in KDFW history,
trailing only the $620,362 wagered during the opening pool in 2005. The 2011
Pool 1 total includes $480,375 wagered to win and $112,117 in exacta bets.
Uncle Mo won his three 2010 starts by a combined margin of 23 1/4 lengths.
Along with his 4 1/4-length win in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, the champion
scored an easy win in the Champagne (G1) at Belmont Park. He is one of two Pool
2 contenders owned by the stable of Mike Repole, who also races the
Pletcher-trained STAY THIRSTY (Bernardini) (#18), winner of last week’s Gotham
S. (G3) at Aqueduct. Pletcher leads all trainers with three KDFW Pool 2 horses,
while three-time Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Bob Baffert trains two in The
Factor and JAYCITO (Victory Gallop) (#10). The latter is scheduled to make his
first start of 2011, and make his debut for Baffert, in Saturday’s San Felipe
(G2) at Santa Anita.
There are four new betting interests in KDFW Pool 2, an unusually small
turnover between betting pools. The new horses in Pool 2 are ARCHARCHARCH (Arch)
(#2), winner of the Southwest (G3) at Oaklawn Park; Southwest third-place
finisher ELITE ALEX (Afleet Alex) (#7); RUNFLATOUT (Flatter) (#14), who is
scheduled to run this weekend in the San Felipe; and San Vicente runner-up SWAY
AWAY (Afleet Alex) (#19). Horses that were part of KDFW Pool 1 that did not
return in this week’s pool were Clubhouse Ride (Candy Ride [Arg]), Decisive
Moment (With Distinction), Indian Winter (Indian Charlie) and Tiz Blessed
(Tiznow).
Information on the Kentucky Derby and the Kentucky Derby Future Wager –
including real-time KDFW Pool 1 odds — is available at the official event Web
site at www.KentuckyDerby.com.
Wagering interests for the Kentucky Derby Future Wager are chosen by a
three-member committee that includes Daily Racing Form national handicapper Mike
Watchmaker and West Coast correspondent Brad Free, and John Asher, vice
president of Racing Communications at Churchill Downs.
One more Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool will be conducted before the 137th
running of the Kentucky Derby on May 7. The final pool of 2011 will run from
April 1-3.
