Two-time leading sire A.P. Indy has been pensioned at William S. Farish’s
Lane’s End Farm near Versailles, Kentucky. The 22-year-old suffers from
age-related testicular degeneration disease but is otherwise in good health. He
has bred 25 mares this year and none have been confirmed in foal.
The 1992 Horse of the Year, who was bred by Farish and W.S. Kilroy, was
foaled at Lane’s End and was the highest priced yearling, at $2.9 million, of
his year. At three, he was Horse of the Year and champion three-year-old colt
with wins in the Belmont S. (Grade 1), Breeders’ Cup Classic (Grade 1), Santa
Anita Derby (Grade 1), Peter Pan S. (Grade 2) and San Rafael S. (Grade 2). At
two, A.P. Indy won the Hollywood Futurity (Grade 1). His career mark was
11-8-0-1, $2,979,815.
A.P. Indy was the leading sire in North America in 2003 and 2006 and sired
such champions as Mineshaft, Bernardini and Rags to Riches. He also leaves a
brilliant legacy in many other areas of the industry. He is an influential sire
of sires — with such sons as Malibu Moon, Pulpit, Mineshaft and Bernardini —
and he is a leading broodmare sire. A.P. Indy was the leading sire of sales
yearlings last year.
“A.P. Indy will remain in the stall he has occupied for almost 20 years”
Farish said. “I feel blessed to have been the co-breeder, along with my friend
Bill Kilroy, of this great horse who was a champion on the track and is proving
to be one of the most influential sires of our time. It is our fondest wish that
he will live a long and happy retirement.”
