BLACK N BEAUTY (Devil His Due) is looking for a bit of redemption in the
Swale after being steadied and then pulled up in the Hutcheson last out. The
Dale Romans charge was a nice maiden winner at Churchill Downs to close out his
juvenile campaign, and showed promise when taking his sophomore bow at
Gulfstream Park on January 7. Unfortunately, he was unable to threaten in his
stakes debut, the Holy Bull S. (G3), and tired to fifth in that one-mile test.
Paco Lopez takes the mount from Kent Desormeaux.
In addition to Razmataz, the Swale also features Group 2 winner INDIANO
(Indian Charlie), runner-up in his first U.S. start on March 20, and recent
O.B.S. Sprint S. victor MEGALITH (Trippi).
The Swale isn’t the only undercard stakes on Florida Derby Day. The program
also includes the $100,000
Skip
Away S. (G3) at 1 3/16 miles, the $100,000
Appleton S. (G3) going a mile on the turf and the $67,400
Sir Shackleton H. sending runners 6 1/2 furlongs.
Last year’s Belmont S. (G1) winner DROSSELMEYER (Distorted Humor)
tops the Skip Away when visits the starting gate for only the second
time since his classic score. The four-year-old chestnut will break from
the rail under Garrett Gomez while facing 10 rivals, including the pair
that beat him last out in the Challenger S. at Tampa Bay Downs. Trainer
Bill Mott saddled Drosselmeyer in that 1 1/16-mile contest off the
nine-month break, and the colt appeared a bit rusty while finishing
fourth.
Grade 3 hero COLIZEO (Distorted Humor) and stakes victor JARDIM (Brz)
LITTLE MIKE (Spanish Steps) will be seeking his third graded victory
A threat to Little Mike in the race will be CHEROKEE ARTIST (Cherokee Run),

Also among the 10-strong field of the Appleton are Group 2 conqueror SAYIF
(Ire) (Kheleyf); Grade 2-placed stakes scorer RIVIERA COCKTAIL (Giant’s
Causeway); and Grade 2 runner-up ASPHALT (War Chant).
Jardim is cross-entered to the Appleton as a main-track only runner.
Rounding out the undercard stakes action on Sunday is the Sir Shackleton S.,
which drew a graded-caliber field of nine. Included in the line-up are Grade 2
winners COFFEE BOY (Yonaguska), D’FUNNYBONE (D’wildcat) and REGAL RANSOM
(Distorted Humor), as well as 2009 King’s Bishop S. (G1) victor CAPT. CANDYMAN
CAN (Candy Ride [Arg]).
