Jockey Shaun Bridgmohan kicked off a five-win day at Churchill Downs on
Sunday with Richard, Bertram and Elaine Klein’s CASH REFUND (Petionville) in the
featured 3RD race.
Cash Refund, the 5-2 third choice, and Chief of Affairs (Yonaguska), the 7-5
favorite, dueled through a first quarter-mile in :21 1/5 over a sloppy main
track. Leaving the backstretch, Cash Refund shook clear of Chief of Affairs,
only to have Riley Tucker (Harlan’s Holiday) range up to his outside. The duo
matched strides to deep stretch, where Cash Refund surged one length clear to
complete the six furlongs in 1:10.
The victory gave trainer Steve Margolis his 100th career win at Churchill
Downs.
It was also the first of four consecutive triumphs on the five-win card for
Bridgmohan. Next came DUBAI’S CONNECTION (E Dubai) as the 3-5 favorite in the
4TH, 11-1 upsetter NEW BAY (Cuvee) in the 5TH and 9-5 favorite COSTLY (Mutakddim),
an 8 3/4-length romper in the 6TH. After an unplaced run in the 7TH, Bridgmohan
rebounded with a 6 3/4-length score aboard NOWHERE TO HIDE (Vindication) in the
8TH.
Bridgmohan now has 11 winners through the first 10 days of the 39-day meet.
Calvin Borel was the most recent rider to have five victories on the card,
accomplishing the feat on April 24, 2010.
Also reaching a milestone Sunday was trainer Steve Asmussen, who became the
fifth trainer in Churchill Downs history to accumulate 400 victories.
Stonestreet Stable’s promising sophomore WILBURN (Bernardini) won the 9TH race
to give Asmussen No. 400. The only trainers ahead of Asmussen are Bill Mott
(641), Dale Romans (521), D. Wayne Lukas (481) and Bernie Flint (426).
