Grade 1-winning millionaire
WEST BY
WEST (Gone West) died on Friday, according to The Jockey Club of Turkey. The
22-year-old, who was exported in 2001, had been standing at Karacabey.
A homebred racing for John H. Peace, West by West compiled a 30-10-3-7 record
while amassing a bankroll of $1,038,123. The Rusty Arnold trainee placed in the
1991 Arlington-Washington Futurity (G2), and in the 1992 Wood Memorial S. (G1),
before breaking through with his first stakes success in the Jamaica H. (G2). He
concluded his sophomore season with a pair of fourth-place efforts versus older
horses in the NYRA Mile (G1) and the Brooklyn H. (G1).
West by West scored his signature win at four in the 1993 Nassau County H.
(G1). Also that year, he captured the Whirlaway H. and placed in the Whitney H.
(G1), Suburban H. (G1) and New Orleans H. (G3). As a five-year-old, he annexed
the Widener H. (G3) and Clarinet King S. and again placed in the Whitney, along
with minor awards in the Excelsior H. (G2) and Saratoga Cup H.
At stud, West by West sired Grade 3 winners Sonic West and Appealing Phylly,
Grade 1-placed stakes heroine Gold from the West, Argentinean Group 1 scorers
Queleden Candela and Trenzado, and such Turkish stakes winners as Ilgazhan,
Gordion, Beran and Sari Lira.
The aptly-named West by West was produced by West Turn (Cox’s Ridge), a full
sister to Brooklyn hero Little Missouri. West Turn appears as the second dam of
two-time champion Kodiak Kowboy (Posse), who won a Sovereign Award as Canada’s
champion two-year-old of 2007 and an Eclipse Award as champion male sprinter of
2009.
