Ghislaine Head’s RIGHT ONE (Fr) (Anabaa) needed every yard of the Widener
turf stretch to catch a loose-on-the-lead Yield Bogey (Langfuhr) in Saturday’s
$100,000
Jaipur S. (G3) at Belmont Park. Yield Bogey set a modest pace of :23 3/5 and
:46 3/5, turned back a deep-stretch bid by Evolutionist (El Prado [Ire]), but
ultimately could not contain the 8-5 favorite Right One, who rallied from sixth
to land the Jaipur by a nose under Javier Castellano. Right One paid $5.40,
$3.10 and $2.40 after completing seven furlongs on firm ground in 1:21 4/5.
“One thing I really like about the horse is that even though the pace was
slow, he still finished very strong,” Castellano said.
The 5-1 Yield Bogey, who also finished second in the 2010 Jaipur, was
three-quarters of a length clear of 15-1 shot Evolutionist for second. The
latter had a half-length up on Radiohead (GB) (Johannesburg), who finished ahead
of Gantry (Pulpit), Targhee Pass (War Chant) and Nordic Truce (Yes It’s True).
D’ Funnybone (D’wildcat) and Spa City Fever (Roaring Fever), the two
main-track-only entrants, were scratched.
A handicap performer in France while conditioned by the owner’s daughter,
Criquette Head-Marak, Right One was imported to the United States this past
winter. His debut for trainer Christophe Clement, in a second-level allowance at
Gulfstream on April 1, was a winning one by three parts of a length. Right One
was next shipped to Belmont for the May 12 Island Sun S. at one mile, a race he
won by two lengths. However, he had his first stateside reversal last time in
the Poker S. (G3), finishing 3 3/4 lengths third behind Courageous Cat (Storm
Cat). Yield Bogey finished second in that race. With this initial graded
triumph, Right One’s record now stands at 20-5-4-3, $247,799.
“I worked for the Heads; I am very close with them and I am delighted to be
able to win a Grade 3 for them,” Clement said. “Perhaps we’ll put him away and
wait for the fall.”
Bred in France by Alec and Ghislaine Head, Right One was produced by the
winning Riziere (Groom Dancer), making him a full brother to French Group 1
winner Rouvres (Fr) and a half-brother to the stakes-placed Realisatrice
(Numerous) and Rizerie (Highest Honor [Fr]). Riziere has also produced a
juvenile full brother to Right One and Rouvres named Riverain. Right One hails
from the family of Japan Cup (Jpn-G1) winner Rose Kingdom (King Kamehameha) as
well as recent Prix du Jockey-Club (Fr-G1) runner-up Bubble Chic (Chichicastenango).
Right One’s fourth dam was Riverqueen (Fr) (Luthier), whose three top-level wins
included the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (Fr-G1) and Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud
(Fr-G1).
