Turallure gets right setup to register Bernard Baruch upset

Last updated: 8/26/11 6:43 PM

Donna Arnold’s TURALLURE (Wando) didn’t have much pace to run at in the July
31 Fourstardave H. (G2) when settling for fifth, three lengths behind the
front-running Sidney’s Candy (Candy Ride [Arg]). The big gray got a more
favorable trip Friday in the $202,000
Bernard
Baruch H. (G2)
courtesy of the favorite Get Stormy (Stormy Atlantic), whom
Turallure was able to wear down in the final sixteenth and deny a second
consecutive win in the Baruch.

Favored at 2-1, Get Stormy made the lead as expected despite drawing post 11.
A multiple Grade 1 winner earlier this season, Get Stormy set fractions of :23
4/5, :48 2/5 and 1:12 2/5, splits much quicker than those seen last month in the
Fourstardave. Turallure, meanwhile, raced near the back of the field while
saving ground. Eased out and advancing through the final turn, Turallure made a
five-wide bid turning for home, wore down a tiring Get Stormy and drew off to
win by 2 1/4 lengths under Julien Leparoux in a time of 1:48 3/5 over the good Mellon turf. The 9-1
fourth choice, Turallure paid $20, $8.20 and $5.70.

Get Stormy held second by three parts of a length over 7-1 third choice
Baryshnikov (Stravinsky), himself a neck clear of 23-1 outsider Boots Ahead
(Storm Boot). Moryba (Brz), Hymn Book (Arch), Paris Vegas (Maria’s Mon), Loup
Breton (Ire) (Anabaa), Interaction (Arg) (Easing Along), Beau Choix (Elusive
Quality) and Blues Street (Street Cry [Ire]) completed the order of finish.

“When I saw how fast they were going up front, I knew we were going to close
ground,” winning trainer Charlie Lopresti said. “It worked out pretty good. In
the Fourstardave he was beaten three lengths but he lost all chance going into
the first turn. Part of that was my fault; all the trainers said they didn’t
want to go with Sidney’s Candy, so we tried to stay off of him, but they went a
half in :50 and three-quarters in 1:14. In hindsight, I probably should have let
him run that day, but it worked out OK.

“That’s a tough horse on the front end (Get Stormy), he really ran a great
race. I thought we’d get by him quicker and he hung on. We’ll probably go to
Keeneland and look at something there.”

The most logical spot for Turallure at Keeneland would be the October 8
Shadwell Turf Mile (G1).

A maiden winner at Ellis Park a year ago in his sixth career start, but only
his second on the turf, Turallure made a successful jump to stakes company by
taking the Cliff Guilliams H. at Ellis by a length right after his graduation.
Winner of a Keeneland allowance in his next start, he concluded his sophomore
campaign with a third in the Commonwealth Turf S. (G3) at Churchill Downs.

Eighth to Get Stormy in the April 15 Maker’s Mark Mile (G1) in his seasonal
bow, Turallure finished second in an allowance at Churchill next out, then took
the Opening Verse overnight stakes over the same course by a length under
Leparoux. That rider was absent when Turallure futilely chased Sidney’s Candy in
the aforementioned Fourstardave, but is now two-for-two aboard the colt.
Turallure’s scorecard now reads 14-5-2-3, $294,085.

Bred in Kentucky by 4-D Stables, Turallure was produced by the winning
Personal Allure (Wekiva Springs), a half-sister to the Grade 3-placed Mr.
Krisley (Mr. Greeley). Turallure’s third dam was Parioli (Bold Bidder), a
multiple Group 3 winner in France and ancestress of Brazilian Group 1 winner
Forever Bond (Choctaw Ridge) and Italian highweight Golden Honor (Hero’s Honor).
Turallure’s female family traces back to Flambino (*Wrack), the dam of 1935
Triple Crown winner Omaha (Gallant Fox).
