Hip No. 3745, a chestnut colt by Fusaichi Pegasus, attracted the highest
price at Friday’s 12th and penultimate session of the Keeneland September
Yearling Sale, going to Tim and Crystal O’Donohue for $52,000. The Kentucky-bred
was consigned by William B. Harrigan (Miacomet Farm Ltd.), agent.
The February 25 foal is out of Whalah (Dixieland Band), a winning full sister
to Passionate Player, who is in turn the dam of multiple Argentinean Group 1
victress Lady Sprinter (Orientate). The yearling’s second dam is Grade 1 queen
Firm Stance (Affirmed), and his fifth dam is noted matron Generals Sister (Count
Fleet).
On Friday, 197 yearlings changed hands for $1,860,800, an increase of 47.5
percent compared to the penultimate session one year ago, when the exact same
number of horses realized $1,261,600. The average also soared 47.5 percent, from
$6,404 to $9,446, while the median more than doubled. The spike from $3,700 to
$7,500 represented a 102.7 percent increase in median. The buyback rate on
Friday decreased 62.6 percent from last year to 13.2 percent.

With one day remaining in the 13-day sale, 2,736 yearlings have brought
$222,179,400, up 12.6 percent from the $197,300,700 fetched by 2,862 horses at
this point in 2010. The $81,206 average rose 17.8 percent from $68,938, and the
$35,000 median climbed 16.7 percent from last year’s $30,000.
