Santa Anita readying for ‘Summer Festival on the Green’
concert series
The California Philharmonic Orchestra, along with Santa Anita Park, is
readying for its highly anticipated “Summer Festival on the Green” concert
series which will begin Saturday at The Great Race Place.
The “Festival on the Green” will consist of a series of five night-time
concerts which will be performed for the first time ever at Santa Anita.
“We’re very excited and so are the folks at Cal Phil,” Santa Anita President
George Haines said. “This is a world-class orchestra headed by Maestro Victor
Vener and our infield area is a perfect venue for what is going to be an
unforgettable series of concerts under the stars. We’ve constructed a
retractable concert clam shell for the orchestra that will provide tremendous
acoustics for all attendees. This will be Cal Phil’s 16th summer season and we
all expect it to be their best ever.”
The summer concert series will start with a bang, as the Cal Phil Orchestra
will be joined on stage by A Thousand Miles pop sensation and three-time
Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Vanessa Carlton beginning at 8 p.m. (PDT) on
Saturday.
Vener and his orchestra will also enthrall their audience with such classical
masterpieces as Respighi’s Pines of Rome.
Additionally, Cal Phil will be accompanied on opening night by the
platinum-selling USC Trojan Marching Band, “The Spirit of Troy.”
“Victor Vener has lined up an incredible array of talent to accompany his
orchestra throughout the summer,” Santa Anita Director of Community Services and
Special Projects Pete Siberell said. “Our second concert, on Saturday, July 14,
is going to include The Association, which is absolutely huge. This is
world-class entertainment and we expect this entire Festival on the Green
series, which runs through Augustu 25, to be a huge success.
“In addition to great entertainment, we know fans of Cal Phil are going to be
happy to discover we’re offering jumbo video screens, gourmet food options,
full-service bars and permanent restrooms.”
The Association, world-renowned for pop classics such as “Cherish,” “Windy,”
and “Never My Love,” first performed these mega-hits in the ’60s.
The remaining summer concerts will all start at 8 p.m. on July 28, August 11
and August 25.
Santa Anita’s spacious infield, which affords attendees the area’s best
unobstructed view of the beautiful San Gabriel Mountains, will be supplied with
tables, benches with backs, and an expansive area for people to relax and enjoy
the concerts on a finely manicured lawn.
Mezzanine seating and a corporate barbeque pit area are also available.
Admission gates will open at 5:30 p.m. and ample, convenient parking will be
available by entering Santa Anita’s infield parking lot via Gate 6, north of the
track, on Colorado Place.
