Grade 1 winner and Kentucky Derby runner-up Bodemeister, unraced since his
neck second in the Preakness Stakes, will undergo diagnostic tests at Rood and
Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky, this week, co-owner Ahmed Zayat
tweeted Wednesday morning. The three-year-old Empire Maker colt has been shipped
from Bob Baffert’s barn in Southern California to WinStar Farm in Versailles,
Kentucky, for his appointment Thursday.
“Bode arrived at Winstar for diagnostic procedure,” Zayat posted on his
Twitter account Wednesday. “He has an appointment tomorrow at (Rood and Riddle)
to tell us what’s wrong with him.
“No one here in (California) knows what’s wrong with him,” Zayat added in his
next post.
Bodemeister was being pointed toward the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational on July
29 before being removed from consideration due to an elevated temperature. His
last official workout came on July 8 at Santa Anita.
In a deal that was announced in June, Bodemeister will stand at WinStar Farm
upon the conclusion of his racing career. The bay is out of Grade 3-winning
Storm Cat mare Untouched Talent and has earned $1,304,800 from a 6-2-4-0 career
line.
Stablemate and fellow Zayat colorbearer Paynter, the Haskell winner and
Belmont Stakes runner-up, is also recovering from an illness. He spiked a fever
while still at Monmouth Park after the Haskell and wound up being second to the
Mid-Atlantic Equine Medical Center in New Jersey. Paynter was vanned to Belmont
Park after being released from the clinic on Friday and will be pointed toward a
fall campaign.
