The Fasig-Tipton Saratoga New York-bred Preferred Yearling Sale concluded
Sunday night at the Humphrey S. Finney Sales Pavilion with across-the-board
increases. Gross receipts at the two-day auction were 28.3 percent higher over
last year, with 138 horses bringing $8,632,000 on Saturday and Sunday, compared
to the $6,725,500 realized from the sale of 124 yearlings in 2011. The average
jumped 15.3 percent, from $54,238 to $62,551, while the median rose an
impressive 42.9 percent, from $35,000 to $50,000.

The second session was highlighted by a Tapit colt who was gaveled down to
Whisper Hill Farm for $330,000. The April 10 foal was consigned by Winter
Quarter Farm, agent.

Produced by Derrianne (Cozzene), whose signature victory came in the Grade 3
Martha Washington in 2003, the gray, who sported Hip No. 448, hails from the
family of Grade 2 winner Gulls Cry (*Sea-Bird), whose descendants include
Grade/Group 2 victors Navesink (Irish River) and Nemain (Alleged).

Live Oak Plantation went to $320,000 to secure an Exchange Rate son of
Zambezi Belle (Lord at War). Consigned by Bluewater Sales, agent, the colt
toured the ring as Hip 396.

A half-brother to Law Enforcement (Posse), a four-time stakes winner in New
York-bred company, the yearling traces back to Medici (Bold Ruler), whose
half-sister Broadway (Hasty Road) produced the likes of juvenile filly champion
Queen of the Stage (Bold Ruler) and her full brother Reviewer, a noted sire.
Broadway’s descendants also include multiple Grade 1 winner and noted sire
Seeking the Gold (Mr. Prospector).

An Indian Charlie half-brother to stakes winner Slew By Slew (Slew City Slew)
sold to IEAH Sales Corp. for $270,000. Hip 440 was consigned by Highclere Sales,
agent.

The March 31 foal was produced by Cradlesong (Pine Bluff), a half-sister to
Grade 3 winners High Cotton (Dixie Union) and Symphony Sid (Unbridled). This is
the family of 1996 juvenile champion Storm Song (Summer Squall) and her Grade
2-winning half-sister Diamond Omi (Giant’s Causeway).

At Sunday’s session, 74 yearlings brought $4,975,000, a 36 percent increase
over last year’s comparable session when 65 head sold for $3,658,000. The
average rose 19.5 percent, from $56,277 to $67,230, while the median saw a minor
bump of 2.2 percent, from $45,000 to $46,000.
