Old Fashioned colt tops final OBS open session

Last updated: 8/23/12 8:15 PM

Hip No. 564, a colt by Old Fashioned from the consignment of Bobby Jones
Equine LLC, agent, went to Greg Gilchrist for $55,000 to top the second and
final open session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2012 August Yearling
Sale on Thursday.

The chestnut colt is out of Catspaw (Storm Cat), who is a daughter of Grade
1-placed stakes winner Footing (Forty Niner) and a half-sister to dual
stakes-placed Strollin Slew (Seattle Slew). Catspaw is also a half-sibling to
the dam of multiple Grade 2 victor Banned (Kitten’s Joy).

The Florida-bred colt was born on January 24 and comes from the same family
as Group 1 diva Peristaltica (Interprete), Grade 2 heroine Masseuse (Dynaformer)
and, further back, 1956 champion two-year-old filly Romanita (Roman).

A Proud Citizen colt and Kitten’s Joy filly tied for the second-highest price
on the day when Nick de Meric, agent, paid $50,000 for each yearling.

The colt was consigned as Hip 482 by Dapple Stud, agent. The April 28-born
chestnut is out of Wildcat Classic (Perfect Vision), who is a half-sister to
stakes winner Avenue Shopper (Avenue of Flags). That one is herself the dam of
Grade 3 victress Laurafina (Cozzene) and multiple stakes diva Beautiful Venue
(Came Home).

The Kentucky-bred colt sold for $2,000 as a Keeneland November weanling last
year, and also counts in his family Grade 2 winner Fan Club’s Mister (Mr.
Greeley), Grade 3 scorer Master Christopher (Master Willie) and Boldnesian, who
is the paternal grandsire of Seattle Slew.

Hip 721, a Kitten’s Joy filly from the same Dapple consignment, also brought
$50,000 from de Meric. The Kentucky-bred, April 11-born bay lass is out of
Indyan Lisa (Lemon Drop Kid) and counts as her second dam multiple Group
3-placed listed winner Lightning Fire (Kris).

That mare also produced Grade 2 queen Beyrouth (Alleged) and multiple
Grade/Group 2-placed listed victress Flame Valley (Gulch). Lightning Fire is a
full sister to French champion Common Grounds (Kris) and a half-sister to Group
3 star Angel in My Heart (Rainbow Quest), who placed in the 1995 editions of the
Grade 1 Matriarch and Grade 1 Yellow Ribbon.

Angel in My Heart is most noted as the dam of 2003 Group 1 Derby hero Kris
Kin (Kris S.), and this is the same female line as Lucayan Princess (High Line),
who left behind a black-type rich legacy that includes highweights and Group 1
winners Luso (Salse) and Warrsan (Caerleon).

For the session, 189 horses grossed $2,128,900, a rise of 8.2 percent when
