Grade 1 Haskell Invitational winner Paynter has fallen ill again and is
unlikely to make next month’s Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby. Owner Ahmed Zayat
tweeted the news Tuesday morning.
Trainer Bob Baffert later revealed to Daily Racing Form that Paynter
was taken from Saratoga Sunday night to Upstate Equine Medical Center in
Schuylerville, New York, where he was being treated for fever and a severe case
of diarrhea.
Paynter has not been able to return to Baffert’s Southern California base
since winning the Haskell on July 29. Days after winning the Haskell, Paynter
was sent to Mid-Atlantic Equine Medical Center in New Jersey where he stayed for
two weeks recovering from ailments similar to what is currently afflicting him.
Zayat tweeted Tuesday night that Paynter remained in stable condition but had
not shown significant improvement since morning.
