Delaunay took Saturday’s $50,000
Temperence Hill at Louisiana Downs gate-to-wire, holding off the
heavy 1-5 post time favorite and Grade 2 winner Gantry. The race was one of five
stakes on the undercard of the Grade 2 Super Derby.
The Maggi Moss-owned
five-year-old gelding by Smoke Glacken ran six furlongs on the fast dirt in
1:10, holding on for a two-length victory. Trained by Tom Amoss and ridden by Gerard Melancon,
this was Delaunay’s second
stakes victory after winning the Kelly’s Landing Stakes at Churchill back in June.
His career record now stands at 34-9-8-3, $309,100.
Gantry was using this as a prep for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint but was unable
to make up any ground during the stretch. The five-year-old gelding entered this
race off a more than two-month layoff, having earned an automatic berth into the
Breeders’ Cup Sprint off a win in the Grade 2 Smile Sprint Handicap on July 7.
Later on the card, She’s Prado’s Idol won the $100,000
River
Cities Stakes by three quarters of a
length despite drifting out in the final furlong. The three-year-old filly,
owned and trained by Garland Goins, took the lead at the top of the stretch and
wouldn’t give in, holding on for the win. Ridden by John Jacinto, she covered
the
1 1/16 miles on firm turf in 1:43 1/5. Finishing in the money in all but one of her
11 lifetime starts, the Screen Idol sophomore filly’s career line now reads 11-7-2-1, $275,320.
She’s All In, the 6-5 favorite off an 8 3/4-length romp in the Grade 3 Sixty
Sails Handicap earlier this season, was attempting a title defense in the River
Cities. A nice allowance winner at Remington Park last out, the dark bay miss
wound up second on this occasion.
In the day’s richest event on the Super Derby undercard, Charles E. Fipike’s Java’s War broke last in the $150,000
Sunday
Silence Stakes but was able to get up and score his first stakes
victory. Coming off a maiden win, the Kenny McPeek trainee was able to overcome
his troubled start to win by a neck. The two-year-old War Pass colt, ridden by Richard
Eramia, covered a mile on the turf in 1:36 3/5. With back-to-back wins, the
colt has now banked $110,319 in his career and boasts a 3-2-0-0 mark.
In the sister race to the Sunday Silence, Always Kitten broke her maiden in
only her second career start in the $100,000
Happy Ticket Stakes under Mike Smith. The two-year-old filly, owned by
breeders Ken and Sarah Ramsey, started to challenge just inside the eighth-pole and
drew clear, winning by 1 1/2 lengths in 1:37 4/5 on the green. Trained by
Michael Maker, the daughter of Kitten’s Joy
looks to continue to add to her resume next time out as she could be
pointed toward the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Her short
career line is now 2-1-1-0, $77,000.
Global Power got away good and didn’t look back in the $100,000
Unbridled Stakes, going wire-to-wire.
The Pulpit four-year-old colt, owned by Luch
Racing Stable, was coming off his first stakes win in the Sussex at Del Mar in
July. With Eramia aboard, Global Power
ran the 1 1/16 miles on turf in 1:41 4/5, winning by 1 1/4 lengths. In the
process, he rewarded trainer Amoss with his second win on the 13-race card at
Louisiana Downs. Global Power added a second stakes win to his line, which now
stands at 14-6-2-1 with $259,745 in earnings.
