Trainer Christophe Clement sent out two of his prominent runners for works
over Belmont Park’s firm inner turf on Sunday.
Grade 3 hero Summer Front breezed a
half-mile in :51 3/5, while Grade 2 queen Mystical Star covered five furlongs in
1:03 2/5.
Summer Front, a four-time stakes winner whose biggest victory to date came in the Grade 3 Hill
Prince on June 16 at Belmont, exits a third-place finish in the Grade 1
Secretariat Stakes at Arlington Park on August 18.
Mystical Star, winner of the Grade 2 New York at Belmont on June 30, comes
off an eighth-place effort in
Arlington’s Grade 1 Beverly D.
“Summer Front had a nice work this morning; it was his first since the
Secretariat,” Clement said. “He finished third, and I thought he had not much
racing luck. He will run in the Jamaica (Grade 1 at 1 1/8 miles on October 6).
“Mystical Star worked this morning as well, and she’s a possibility for the
Flower Bowl (Grade 1 at 1 1/4 miles on September 29). I’m not sure about it yet, but
she’s possible.”
Clement also reported that both of his runners in Saturday’s Grade 3 Noble
Damsel — winner Naples Bay and fourth-place finisher Federation — returned
well from the one-mile turf race.
“Naples Bay is doing well and Federation came back in good order as well,”
Clement said. “No further plan at the moment, we’ll enjoy it for a few days.
Everything is possible. Everything is wide open.”
