Politicallycorrect goes to extremes to upset Oklahoma Derby

Last updated: 9/30/12 8:06 PM

Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s homebred Politicallycorrect rallied on the extreme
outside to upset 2-1 favorite Willy Beamin in Sunday’s $400,000
Oklahoma
Derby
at Remington Park. Hung out seven wide down the lane, the 10-1 chance
came with an irresistible late charge beneath Kent Desormeaux to prevail in the
shadow of the wire, snapping the favorite’s six-race winning streak.

Trained by Wesley Ward, Politicallycorrect had placed in a pair of stakes
over the summer. The Kitten’s Joy gelding finished third in the Easy Goer at
Belmont and runner-up to Prospective in the Grade 3 Ohio Derby, but was last
seen trailing in the Grade 2 Amsterdam at Saratoga on July 29. The break, and a
step back up in trip, helped to engineer a form reversal.

As Willy Beamin forced the pace set by Master Rick through fractions of :23
1/5, :47 2/5 and 1:12 1/5, Politicallycorrect was positioned a few lengths off
the pace. Willy Beamin put Master Rick away, only to run a gauntlet of
challenges turning for home. Prospective, Suns Out Guns Out and Called to Serve
all loomed boldly, but Willy Beamin fought them off.

Then Politicallycorrect was unleashed on the far outside. Finishing fast, he
overhauled Willy Beamin to win going away by three-quarters of a length. The
winner negotiated 1 1/8 miles on the fast track in 1:50 1/5 and sparked mutuels
of $22.20, $9.20 and $6.

Willy Beamin had a head to spare over Called to Serve, with Suns Out Guns Out
another three-quarters of a length astern in fourth. Prospective weakened inside
the final furlong and wound up fifth. Next came Daddy Nose Best, Master Rick,
Ted’s Folly, Speightscity and Diamond Joe.

Politicallycorrect now sports a mark of 12-3-3-2, $351,375. The
Kentucky-bred, who broke his maiden at Gulfstream Park last December in his
fourth try, was well beaten in both the Gulfstream Park Derby and Grade 1 Blue
Grass. He began to turn the corner when runner-up to Atigun in a Churchill Downs
allowance on Kentucky Derby Day, and continued his progress in his stakes
placings.

Alvin Haynes and Beth Burchell’s Sticks Wondergirl wired the field in the
$250,000 Remington Park Oaks,
the richest event on the undercard. The three-year-old filly by Stevie Wonderboy
was able to open up at the eighth-pole, then had to dig down to repel even-money
favorite Jemima’s Pearl by three-quarters
of a length. Trained by Greg Burchell, Sticks Wondergirl stopped the clock in
1:44 for 1 1/16 miles with Jon Court aboard. This was her third win in a row, which increases her lifetime earnings to $191,638, and her career mark now reads
4-3-0-0.

One race later, Black Hawk Stable’s Alsvid took the $200,000
Remington
Park Sprint Cup
by a nose from Apprehender. The Chris Hartman trainee stalked the pace from the
inside before taking over the lead into the stretch, and the 8-5 favorite was
just able to hang on. Ridden by Chris Landeros, the three-year-old gelding covered six
furlongs in 1:09 2/5. The son of Officer has compiled a record
of 10-7-0-1, $361,465.

The $125,000
Remington Green was captured by John C. Oxley’s Lockout. The three-year-old colt by Limehouse
was up close early from the inside and gained a short lead deep into
the stretch, winning by a head from the seven-year-old Golden Yank. The Mark Casse trainee covered 1 1/16 miles over
the good turf in 1:42 1/5 with Jermaine Bridgmohan aboard. With this first
stakes victory to his credit, Lockout’s scorecard stands at 9-3-5-0, $258,527.

Skedee kicked off the Oklahoma Derby undercard with a photo-finish win in the $50,000
Ladies on the Lawn
for Oklahoma-bred distaffers. Jockey Benny Landeros had her in second throughout and
was all out late to win by a head. Skedee covered the 7 1/2 furlongs over the
good turf in 1:31. The seven-year-old mare is trained by Mary Lowder, who co-owns her in partnership with breeders Robert Poteet and John
Lowder. The daughter of Sefapiano boosts her bankroll to $362,752 with this
stakes victory, and her career line now reads 28-8-9-3.
