Grade 1 CashCall Futurity runner-up Fury Kapcori has suffered a setback that
will rule him out of his scheduled reappearance in Saturday’s Grade 2 Robert B.
Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita, according to a report in Daily Racing Form.
“He’s got a little problem,” Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer told
DRF Sunday. “It might cost him a little time.”
Fury Kapcori, a son of Hall of Famer Tiznow, showed more speed and precocity
than his pedigree implied. A six-length maiden winner sprinting 5 1/2 furlongs
at Golden Gate Fields in August, he captured his stakes debut in the Charlie
Palmer Futurity at Fresno before heading south to Hollywood Park. Fury Kapcori battled
throughout en route to his half-length loss in the Real Quiet, and attracted attention with his
commendable second to Violence in the CashCall on December 15.
In his absence, the remaining top contenders in the 1 1/16-mile Bob Lewis are
Bob Baffert’s hotshot debut winner Flashback, who is scheduled to work Monday,
and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile runner-up He’s Had Enough, who is still on the
learning curve for trainer Doug O’Neill.
He’s Had Enough worked six furlongs in company with
older Grade 2 winner Handsome Mike on Friday under Mario Gutierrez in 1:10 4/5,
but the time was deceptive because the gray son of Tapit had to persevere to
keep up with the four-year-old Handsome Mike.
“Mario’s gotten to know the horse,” O’Neill said, alluding
to two races in which the jockey rode the gray son of Tapit, a second by a head
to champion Shanghai Bobby in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, and an eventful fifth
in the CashCall Futurity.
“He’s a horse that doesn’t apply himself,” O’Neill said of
the colt owned by J. Paul Reddam. “You have to stay after him to keep him to his
task. About mid-work Friday, Mario said he could feel him coming off the bridle
and stop trying.

“So he got after him, he finished up good and came out of
it great. I think the more Mario gets to know him, the better we’re going to see
him.”
