Mutuel field leads KDFW after Day 1; Flashy Gray early favorite in KOFW

Mutuel field leads KDFW after Day 1; Flashy Gray early
favorite in KOFW

The first day of betting in the second Kentucky Derby Future Wager (KDFW) pool of 2013 was highlighted by
expected strong support for unbeaten Verrazano (#22) and other three-year-old
stars, but the “All Others” (#24) betting interest was the strong 8-5 fan
favorite when opening day wagering drew to a close late Friday evening.

The mutuel field, or “All Others,” includes all three-year-old
Thoroughbreds other than the 23 horses on KDFW Pool 2’s roster of betting
interests. Kentucky Derby fans at racetracks and off-track betting centers
across North America and online at
TwinSpires.com and other advance deposit wagering platforms wagered
$62,287 on the first day of betting in the Derby Future pool. Friday’s total
included $49,937 in win wagers and $12,350 in exactas.

Verrazano, the 10-1 co-favorite among the individual betting interests in Churchill Downs oddsmaker Mike Battaglia’s Pool 2 morning line, remained a narrow 10-1 betting
choice among individual horses at the end of opening day wagering. One of six
horses in the pool trained by Todd Pletcher, Verrazano edged a trio of horses at
12-1 comprised of Grade 2 Robert B. Lewis winner Flashback (#6), Grade 3 Holy
Bull scorer Itsmyluckyday (#8) and Grade 2 Fountain of Youth victor Orb (#11). Flashback is one of five Pool 2 betting interests trained by three-time Kentucky
Derby winner Bob Baffert.

Following that group at 13-1 was Revolutionary (#15), the
Pletcher-trained winner of the Grade 3 Withers, and Baffert’s Grade 3 Southwest
conqueror Super Ninety Nine (#18) at 18-1.

Reigning two-year-old champion Shanghai Bobby (#17), also trained by Pletcher, closed the day as a 20-1 risk and
Grade 2 Remsen runner-up Normandy
Invasion (#10), fifth in his 2013 debut in the Grade 2 Risen Star, stood at 26-1.

Unlike the KDFW, the only pool of the 2013 Kentucky Oaks Future Wager (KOFW)
saw Flashy Gray (#9) chosen as the people’s early favorite following the opening
day of betting. Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott does not have a victory in the
Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks among his vast collection of wins at Churchill Downs, but
his impressive Flashy Gray topped 24 wagering interests as the surprising 5-1
betting choice.

The daughter of Flashy Bull, a winner of two of three
career starts for Churchill Downs’ all-time leading trainer, is one of four Mott-trained fillies in the pool.
Flashy Gray had been listed as a 15-1 risk by Battaglia in his morning line odds for the KOFW pool.

Close behind Flashy Gray at 6-1 was the more experienced
Unlimited Budget, (#23), a Pletcher-trained daughter of Street Sense who ran her victory string to
a perfect
three-for-three with an easy victory in last week’s Grade 3 Rachel Alexandra at Fair
Grounds. Pletcher has a pair of victories in the Kentucky Oaks to his credit.

Unlimited Budget was followed on the odds board by the
mutuel field (#24), which features all three-year-old fillies other than the 23
individual horses on the KOFW betting roster. The All Others bet stood at 7-1
when opening day wagering concluded late Friday evening.

Fans wagered $15,066 on the first of three days of betting
in the KOFW at racetracks and off-track betting centers
across North America and online at
TwinSpires.com and other internet wagering
platforms. The Friday total included $3,868 in exacta bets.

The Kentucky Oaks will be run for the 139th
consecutive year under the Twin Spires on May 3, the eve of the Kentucky
Derby. The Run for the Roses will take place for the 139th consecutive year at Churchill Downs on May 4.

Wagering resumed on Saturday at noon (EST) for both the KDFW and KOFW.
Wagering for the three-day Derby pool is set to conclude at 6 p.m. on Sunday,
while the Oaks pool will close at 6:30 p.m.

Information on the Kentucky Derby and Oaks is available online at the
respective official websites,
kentuckyderby.com and
kentuckyoaks.com. Real-time odds will be presented on the sites
throughout the three-day betting pool.
