Clarence Scharbauer Jr.’s homebred Fiftyshadesofgold dominated her maiden
debut at Lone Star Park by 10 lengths, and on Saturday brought her game to
Churchill Downs in the $113,400
Debutante on the Downs After Dark program.
With Corey Lanerie aboard, the gray filly dueled with More Than Beauty
through a blistering opening split of :21 1/5 before slowing it down through a
half-mile in :45. Fiftyshadesofgold put her rival away in the lane and easily
drew off to be eight lengths clear on the wire while stopping the clock in 1:10
3/5 for six furlongs over the fast dirt track.
Sent off the 6-5 favorite, the Bret Calhoun-trained juvenile filly paid
$4.60, $3.20 and $3 while moving her mark to a perfect two-for-two and boosting
her earnings to $77,790.
More Than Beauty was game in second, five lengths clear of Del Mar Holiday
and Silver Valley, who were only separated by the former’s nose on the line.
Completing the order of finish were Yokohama Mama, Deliver, Teardrop, Medalbu,
Sara Bay, Mi Perlita and Richies Sweetheart.
The Texas-bred Fiftyshadesofgold is by My Golden Song and out of the winning
Hadif mare Hadif Cat, making her a half-sister to the stakes-winning Early Flyer
full siblings Sword Trick and Tastefullyxcessive. Hadif Cat is herself a full
sister to stakes victor Screen Pass as well as a half-sister to the
stakes-placed Cats Legend, who produced black-type heroine Circustown Rose.
Fiftyshadesofgold’s third dam is Grade 2 queen Alysbelle, who is a full
sister to 1988 Horse of the Year and dual classic star Alysheba. Also of note in
this female family is Group 1-winning sire Lear Fan.
