New Farm’s homebred Rainbow Heir grabbed command of Thursday’s Grade 3,
$116,000

Jersey Shore
at Monmouth Park and never looked back en route to a
scintillating five-length score under jockey Elvis Trujillo.

“He got out really quick,” trainer Ben Perkins Jr. said. “He relaxed
afterwards and as soon as Elvis got clear he was kind of just sitting and
waiting. He’s an excellent horse and he has a similar body and has the same
disposition as Wildcat Heir, both are really relaxed and lightning fast.”

Sent off the 6-5 favorite against his five rivals, the Wildcat Heir sophomore
set blistering splits of :21 4/5 and :44 3/5 while pressured by Whiskey Romeo to
his outside. Amarish was biding his time just in behind on the rail before
moving up to split the duo rounding the turn. As Whiskey Romeo faded, Amarish
put in his run but Rainbow Heir simply shifted into another gear and drew off to
finish six furlongs on the fast main track in 1:09 2/5.

“I knew I had a speed horse to the outside of me (Whiskey Romeo) and we were
head-to-head for about the first five jumps,” Trujillo explained. “My horse
broke so good that we were able to make the lead and when the other horse sat
back just a little bit I thought ‘Slow it down as much as possible.’ In the
stretch, I asked him, he switched leads and that was it. He’s just really good.”

Those who backed the chestnut colt’s attempt to remain undefeated were
rewarded with payouts of $4.40, $3 and $2.60. Amarish was best of the rest, 4
1/4 lengths in front of Uptown Boy, while 26-1 longshot Two T’s at Two B rounded
out the top four another 2 1/4 lengths behind in fourth. Res Judicata came next
while Whiskey Romeo rounded out the field. English Manor was scratched.

Rainbow Heir was making his stakes bow in the Jersey Shore and doubled his
lifetime earnings to $152,460 while moving his record to a perfect
four-for-four. The New Jersey-bred sophomore took his maiden debut on February
13 at Laurel Park by 5 3/4 lengths, recorded a March 21 optional-claiming score
by a half-length at that same venue, then wired an allowance on May 12 at
Monmouth by two lengths.

Rainbow Heir is the first registered stakes winner out of the stakes-placed
Prospectors Gamble mare Rainbow Pride. The 16-year-old mare is a half-sister to
stakes victor The Professor and a full sister to the dam of Grade 2 hero Santana
Strings.

Rainbow Heir’s third dam is the Spy Song mare Tingle, who captured the 1960
Ashland before going on in the breeding shed to produce the dam of Grade 2
winner and 1979 Kentucky Oaks runner-up Himalayan. His fifth dam is 1941
champion two-year-old filly Petrify.
