Ramseys, favorites dominate stakes at Kentucky Downs

Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s homebred Coalport emerged by a nose in a photo finish
in Saturday’s $123,917
Franklin-Simpson Mile Stakes at Kentucky Downs.
The 2-1
favorite and paid his supporters $6 to win.

The Wayne Catalano trainee settled
in midpack, rallied in the stretch and got up just in time for his second stakes
score. The four-year-old colt stopped the teletimer in 1:35 4/5 going one mile
over the firm turf with Channing Hill up.

Trend took second while it was just a
neck back to the third-place finisher Utley. Ol Army, Positive Side, 2012
Franklin-Simpson winner Depeche Chat, Mellow Fellow and Lonesome Street rounded out
the order of finish.

Coalport captured his first stakes in the Black Tie Affair
Handicap against Illinois-breds over Arlington’s turf course in June. The son of
Kitten’s Joy ran sixth in the Arlington Handicap in July and was exiting an
optional claiming win last month. The chestnut now has a record of
15-6-2-0, $292,615.

Earlier on the card, Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s Longhunter was victorious as the
5-2 favorite in the $137,050
Kentucky Downs Turf Dash Stakes and returned $7.80
to his supporters for the win.

The Mike Maker trainee stalked the pace four
wide as eventual sixth-place finisher Saint Leon posted swift fractions of :22
3/5 and :45 3/5. Longhunter poked his head in front with a furlong to go and
held on by a half-length to avenge last years seventh-place finish in this race.
The five-year-old gelding crossed the wire in 1:10 1/5 going six-furlongs with
Alan Garcia up.

Xbalanque was a late-charging second, while it was just a
half-length back to Ancil in third. It was another three-quarters of a
length back to the 2011 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint winner Regally Ready in
fourth. Tidal Volume, Saint Leon, Luzianna Man, Cherokee Lord, 2012 Kentucky
Downs Turf Dash winner Good Lord and Perfect Parker completed the order under the
wire. Gold for Cash, Havelock and Sweet Cassiopeia were scratched from the race.

Longhunter last won a stakes race back in 2011 in the Alligator Alley Stakes at
Gulfstream Park and was exiting a sixth-place finish in the Fiddler’s Patriot
Stakes over Saratoga’s Mellon turf course on July 21. With Saturday’s score, the
son of Halling captured his second stakes to increase his lifetime earnings to
$275,339 from a career line of 21-7-2-1.

In the first stakes race on the card, Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s homebred Lien On
Kitten went from last to first in her stakes debut in the $162,500
Kentucky
Downs Juvenile Fillies Stakes

The Catalano charge made her move six wide into
the stretch, surged to lead inside the final furlong and prevailed by 1 1/2
lengths. The two-year-old chestnut filly covered seven furlongs in 1:24 3/5 with
Hill aboard. The daughter of Kitten’s Joy paid her backers $5.80 to win as the
9-5 favorite and now has $122,141 in lifetime earnings from two starts.
She broke her maiden at first asking over Arlington’s turf course back on July
28.

Julep settled for second, while it was another five lengths back to Personal
Diary in third. Pocket Gift, Saturday Storms, Redheaded Witch, La Mejor Fiesta,
Maybe Lily and Beccawhit rounded out the order of finish.

In the companion race to the fillies, Brian Hall, William Gessman and River
Ridge Ranch’s Boji Moon romped by 5 1/4 lengths in his grass debut to remain
undefeated in the $117,250
Kentucky Downs Juvenile Stakes.

The Chris Richard-trained two-year-old gelding tracked the
pace outside the leader, took over the lead in midstretch and kicked clear
leaving his rivals behind. The 7-5 favorite crossed the wire in 1:23 1/5 for the
seven-furlong contest and paid his supporters $4.80 to win.

Here’s Johnny 
got up for second while Sweet Johnny was 4 1/4 lengths back in third. Pure
Luxury and Aft were fourth and fifth, respectively. Mister Special, Runkle and
School On a Hill were scratched from the race.

Boji Moon banked $68,045 for his third win in a row and boosted his account
to $141,359 from three career starts. The son of Cactus
Ridge broke his maiden on debut by 11 lengths on July 6 and was exiting
a 12-length win in the Iowa Cradle Stakes last month, both against Iowa-breds at
Prairie Meadows.
