Mr. and Mrs. Larry D. Williams’ homebred Tamarando returned to a synthetic
surface and found himself posing in the winner’s circle again after coming from
last to first to capture Saturday’s $100,750
Real
Quiet Stakes
for two-year olds at Hollywood Park.
The 6-5 favorite Green Mask, however, tired to fourth.

Tamarando broke his maiden in his third start against state-breds on August
18 over the Polytrack at Del Mar and made the jump to graded stakes next time
out by taking down the Del Mar Futurity on September 4. The son of Bertrando
finished third in his first start on conventional dirt in the FrontRunner later
that month and was exiting a closing third in the Golden State Juvenile Stakes
earlier this month at Santa Anita Park.

In the Real Quiet, the Jerry Hollendorfer charge raced in last as eventual third-place finisher
Karma King led the field through opening splits of :23, :46 3/5 and 1:11 3/5.

“I used him a little bit early to make sure he didn’t get too far back,”
jockey Rafael Bejarano said. “I found my position right away and just went from
there. I tried to make a little move at the half-mile to get position by the
three-eighths. He’s got a real good kick. The distance is the key for him. He
can really run.”

Tamarando was still nine lengths off the lead at the half-mile mark before
launching a wide rally around the far turn. He surged to the lead just past the
eighth pole and drew off to win by 3 1/4 lengths, stamping himself as a leading
contender for the December 14 CashCall Futurity here.

The dark bay crossed the wire in 1:44 1/5 for the 1 1/16-mile test over the
Cushion Track. The 5-2 second choice rewarded his
backers $7.40 for the score and he now has $355,120 in lifetime earnings from a
7-3-1-2 line.

“We’ve had some chances to prove ourselves with some of our two-year-olds
this year and we’re just thankful for the opportunity,” Hollendorfer said. “I
think he’ll definitely run in the CashCall Futurity. He just loves the
distance.”

Electric Eddie got up for second, three-quarters of a length ahead of
third-place finisher Karma King. Green Mask, Life Is a Joy, Mr.
Splash, Beach Hut and Better Bet rounded out the order of finish.

Green Mask didn’t help his chances by tugging early in his two-turn debut.

“He was a little aggressive first time going long,” jockey Kent Desormeaux
said. “It’s
educational for him. He’ll be OK, he just has to listen to his rider.”

The California-bred Tamarando is out of the Grade 3-placed Dehere mare
Tamarack Bay, making him a half-brother to stakes winners Luckarack and U’narack
as well as stakes-placed Tamarack Smarty.

This is the family of current juvenile star No Nay Never, an unbeaten winner
of the Norfolk at Royal Ascot and the Prix Morny Deauville; Grade/Group 2
winners Winning Pact and Half a Year; Grade 3 scorer Cat’s Career; multiple
Grade 2 king Event of the Year; and Grade 1 scorer So Many Ways.
