Jockey Junior Alvarado will undergo surgery on Thursday to repair a broken
left ankle and will be out for approximately three months, his agent, Mike
Selitto, said Monday.
Alvarado sustained the injury prior to the running of Sunday’s East View
Stakes at Aqueduct, when his mount, Miss Narcissist, flipped in the gate and
unseated the rider. Alvarado was taken by ambulance to North Shore University
Hospital for X-rays and was discharged that evening to see his personal
physician.
Selitto said Alvarado would await the surgery at home.
Alvarado, 27, currently is fifth in the jockey standings for the Aqueduct
inner-track meet with six victories. For the year, he has 188 wins for
$12,338,908 on The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) circuit, including
30 stakes victories, among them a pair of Grade 1s — the Forego with Strapping
Groom and the Cigar Mile Handicap aboard Flat Out.
