The American Graded Stakes Committee of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders
Association on Friday presented its listing of U.S. Graded and Listed stakes
races for 2014, the results of its annual grading session conducted December 4
in Lexington, Kentucky.
The Committee reviewed 713 unrestricted U.S. stakes races with a purse of at
least $75,000, and assigned graded status to 455 of them, two fewer than were
graded in 2013, and Listed status to 190 races. A total of five graded races
were upgraded, including one new Grade 1 race and four new Grade 2 races; three
new Grade 3 races were named; 30 new Listed races were upgraded from Non-Listed
Black Type status. Three races which carried graded status and 25 races which
carried Listed status in 2013 are no longer eligible for grading.
One race was upgraded to Grade 1 status for 2014: the La Troienne at
Churchill Downs.
Two races were downgraded from Grade 1 to Grade 2 for 2014: the Prioress at
Saratoga and Princess Rooney Handicap at Calder.
Four races were upgraded to Grade 2 status for 2014: the Azeri at Oaklawn
Park and Sabin, Holy Bull and Swale at Gulfstream Park.
Seven races were downgraded from Grade 2 to Grade 3 in 2014: the Go for Wand
at Aqueduct, Santa Barbara Handicap at Santa Anita, Vagrancy Handicap and Dwyer
at Belmont Park, Sanford at Saratoga, La Jolla Handicap at Del Mar and Hutcheson
at Gulfstream Park. The El Encino and San Luis Obispo at Santa Anita and Jim
Murray Handicap at Hollywood Park were not eligible for grading in 2014.
Three races were upgraded to Grade 3 status for 2014: the Charles Town Oaks
at Charles Town, Torrey Pines at Del Mar and L.A. Woman at Santa Anita.
Two races were downgraded from Grade 3 to Listed status for 2013: the Sapling
at Monmouth Park and Ohio Derby at Thistledown.
Thirty races were upgraded to Listed status for 2014: the Oak Tree Juvenile
Fillies Turf and Oak Tree Juvenile Turf at Del Mar; Paseana Handicap, Surfer
Girl, Zuma Beach and Juvenile Turf Sprint at Santa Anita Park; Busher, Ruthless,
Interborough, Correction and Evening Attire at Aqueduct; Easy Goer at Belmont
Park; Miss Preakness, Skipat and Jim McKay Turf Sprint at Pimlico; Lady
Baltimore, Laurel Turf Cup and Laurel Dash at Laurel; Tiffany Lass, Marie G.
Krantz Memorial, Tenacious Handicap, Louisiana Handicap, Thanksgiving Handicap,
Colonel Power, Bonapaw and F.W. Gaudin Memorial at Fair Grounds; Swatara and
Mountainview Handicap at Penn National; Bull Dog Handicap at Fresno, and
American St Leger at Arlington Park.
Sixteen races were downgraded from Listed to Non-Listed Black Type status for
2014: the Mountaineer Juvenile Fillies at Mountaineer; Miss Shenandoah and
Robert Hilton Memorial at Charles Town; Prima Donna at Oaklawn Park; Harry
Henson Handicap, Riley Allison Futurity and Sunland Park Handicap at Sunland
Park; California State Fair Sprint Handicap at Sacramento; Dover at Delaware
Park; Prairie Gold Juvenile at Prairie Meadows; Gold Rush at Golden Gate Fields;
Evangeline Mile Handicap at Evangeline Downs; Bosselman/Gus Fonner at Fonner
Park; David M. Vance Sprint at Remington Park; Premier Cup Handicap at Zia Park;
and Phoenix Gold Cup Handicap at Turf Paradise.
Races not eligible for grading in 2014 were the Labor Day, Dale Baird
Memorial and Ohio Valley at Mountaineer; Battlefield, Garden State, Dearly
Precious, Spend a Buck and Select at Monmouth Park; Dallas Turf Cup, Ouija Board
Distaff, Cinemine and Valid Expectations at Lone Stark Park; Vincent A.
Moscarelli Memorial and R.R.M. Carpenter Jr. Memorial at Delaware Park; Charlie
Palmer Futurity at Fresno; Southampton at Parx Racing; Corte Madera, California
Oaks and Golden Poppy at Golden Gate Fields; Instant Racing at Oaklawn Park;
Railbird at Hollywood Park; Santa Paula and La Puente at Santa Anita; Whirlaway
at Aqueduct; and Calder Derby at Calder.
