Overnight rain in the New Orleans area was followed Friday
morning by continuous thunderstorms, forcing officials to cancel Friday’s
nine-race card at Fair Grounds.
“The safety of our jockeys and horses will always be our first priority,” General Manager of Racing Howard H. Withers
said. “We experienced severe weather throughout the morning and anticipate that
it will continue through the afternoon.
“In the interests of safety for all of our participants, we have canceled the
entire Friday racing program.”
Racing is scheduled to resume Saturday with a 13-race card
highlighted by the 101st running of the Grade 2, $1 million Louisiana Derby. First post is 12:30 p.m.
(CDT).
