Mutuel field continues reign in KDFW Pool 3

Last updated: 3/1/14 7:27 PM

The mutuel field (#24), or “All Others,” continued to attract the most
attention during Churchill Downs’ 2014 Kentucky Derby Future Wager (KDFW).
Wagering on the penultimate Pool 3 closed Saturday with that choice favored
at 3-1. The field was also favored in the first two pools at odds of 4-5 and
3-2, respectively.

Honor Code (#9) was the public’s individual choice in the first two pools,
but found himself beat out by Cairo Prince (#3) this time around. That Kiaran
McLaughlin trainee, who will now run in the Godolphin Stables silks after a
majority interest in him was purchased by Darley, saw his odds close at 9-1
after an opening morning-line price of 8-1.

Cairo Prince actually just missed to Honor Code when second by a nose in the
pair’s juvenile finale in the Remsen last November, but opened his sophomore
campaign with an easy 5 3/4-length romp in the Holy Bull on January 25. The
Pioneerof the Nile colt, who was the second individual choice at 13-1 in Pool 2,
breezed Saturday morning at Palm Meadows, clocking five furlongs in a bullet :59
4/5 ahead of the Grade 1, $1 million Florida Derby on March 29 at Gulfstream
Park.

Top Billing (#20) and Honor Code both closed at 11-1, with Top Billing the
slight third choice when bringing $598.21 more into the pool. Trained by Shug
McGaughey, who saddled Orb to Kentucky Derby honors last year, Top Billing just
made his stakes bow in the February 22 Fountain of Youth and rallied for third.
The chestnut son of Curlin could try to emulate Orb by showing up next in the
Florida Derby prior to his date under the Twin Spires on the first Saturday in
May.

Fellow McGaughey pupil Honor Code has yet to compete this year but is
expected to take part in the Grade 2, $600,000 Rebel at Oaklawn Park on March
15.

Candy Boy (#5) rounded out the superfecta of favored individual interests in
Pool 3 of the KDFW, closing at 12-1 for conditioner John Sadler. The Candy Ride
colt is gearing up for the Grade 1, $1 million Santa Anita Derby on April 5
following his half-length victory in the Robert B. Lewis in early February.

The fourth and final KDFW Pool is set for March 27-29.
