Santa Anita has announced its 2014 summer stakes schedule, which will begin
April 25 and conclude June 29. The 40-day meeting will offer horsemen a total of
34 added-money races, 21 of them graded including six Grade 1 events.
Beginning opening day, April 25, with the Grade 3, $100,000 Last Tycoon, for
three-year-olds and up at 1 1/8 miles on turf, through closing day June 29, with
the Grade 2, $200,000 San Juan Capistrano for three-year-olds and up at about 1
3/4 miles on turf, Santa Anita will offer a full complement of stakes for horses
in all categories.
All six Grade 1 stakes — the Gamely on May 26, the American Oaks on May 31,
the Vanity on June 14, the Shoemaker Mile on June 14, the Triple Bend on June 28
and The Gold Cup at Santa Anita on June 28, were previously run at Hollywood
Park, which closed on December 22.
“With the closing of Hollywood Park, we’re obviously entering into a new
frontier here in Southern California,” said Tom Ludt, Senior Vice President,
Racing & Gaming for the Stronach Group. “We have incorporated a good many of the
longstanding, successful stakes that had been offered at Hollywood and added
several of our own for what we think is a very comprehensive stakes schedule
that will provide owners and horsemen many opportunities routing and sprinting,
on both turf and dirt.
“Our Grade 1 stakes speak for themselves and we think it’s going to be a
great way to end our meet with races like the Gold Cup and the San Juan
Capistrano on June 28 and 29. With our expanded dates schedule and the Breeders’
Cup coming here for an unprecedented third consecutive year this fall, this is
an exciting time in racing and Santa Anita is proud to be leading the way.”
