Competitive Yellow Ribbon on tap for Del Mar’s Labor Day
program
A well-matched field of nine distaffers has been entered to go 1 1/16 miles
over Del Mar‘s turf in the
Grade 2, $200,000
Yellow Ribbon Handicap on the Labor Day Monday program that also includes a
pair of lucrative stakes for juveniles.
The Yellow Ribbon caps off the stakes action on Monday that begins when eight
California-bred colts and geldings go six furlongs on the Polytrack in the
$150,000
I’m
Smokin followed by a field of 11 taking on the $100,000
Oak Tree Juvenile Fillies Turf at a mile.
Parranda is one of the top draws in the Yellow Ribbon off four stakes
victories this season. The daughter of English Channel opened her five-year-old
campaign with a pair of wins in the Florida Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf
and Suwannee River at
Gulfstream Park. She ran an uncharacteristic sixth in the Honey Fox next
out, was transferred to Jerry Hollendorfer and shipped to California.
Next up for the chestnut mare was a return to the winner’s circle in the
Wilshire at Santa Anita
Park followed by a third in the Gamely and a neck score in the Royal
Heroine. Parranda enters the Yellow Ribbon off a third in the Clement L. Hirsch
on August 2 and brings jockey Elvis Trujillo along for the ride.
Miss Serendipity was the nose victress of the Gamely two back prior to a
last-of-six run in the John C. Mabee three weeks ago. The Ron McAnally-trained
six-year-old is a Group 1 winner in Argentina and appears to have brought that
form with her to the United States, having also placed in the Santa Barbara
Handicap and Santa Ana while finishing fourth in the Buena Vista and Paseana to
account for her six tries stateside thus far. Brice Blanc takes back the mount
from Rafael Bejarano, who rode Miss Serendipity in the Mabee.
Bejarano will instead be aboard Stormy Lucy, who recorded back-to-back scores
in the Santa Ana and Santa Barbara. The inconsistent Stormy Atlantic mare
proceeded to sandwich a seventh in the Royal Heroine between fourth-place runs
in the Gamely and Mabee.
Also exiting the Mabee are Wishing Gate and Cozze Up Lady, the respective
second and third separated by only a half-length on the wire. Wishing Gate
rallied for fourth in the Royal Heroine before that while Cozze Up Lady brought
a half-length Osunitas victory into the Mabee. Drayden Van Dyke has the call on
Wishing Gate while Kent Desormeaux has piloting duties on Cozze Up Lady.
Heat du Jour and stakes debuter Winning Rhythm are both entering the Yellow
Ribbon off wins, with the former scoring in the Solana Beach Handicap and the
latter taking an optional claimer over course and distance. The field is
completed by Irish-breds Need You Now, a two-time stakes winner, and Bunairgead,
a multiple Group 3-placed listed victress in her native country.
Earlier, dual stakes hero Wake Up Nick seeks to move his record to a perfect
four-for-four in the I’m Smokin against fellow unbeaten stakes winner Truely
Quick. Sorrento third-placer Heart of Paradise highlights the Oak Tree Juvenile
Fillies Turf.
