Key maiden winner Recount one to fear in A-W Futurity

A return engagement on the
Arlington Polytrack
might be what Recount needs to return to the winner’s circle in Saturday’s Grade
3, $125,000

Arlington-Washington Futurity
going seven furlongs.

A Limehouse gelding trained by Jim DiVito, Recount was one of the more
impressive juvenile maiden winners at the Chicagoland course this summer.
Debuting in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden on July 20, the bay dueled for the lead
before drawing off in the stretch to win by 4 1/2 lengths.

Returning rivals Bourbon Cowboy and Ike Walker, second and fourth in that
heat, subsequently flattered that form, graduating by margins of 1 3/4 lengths
and 7 1/4 lengths in their respective next outings.

Recount took his show on the road to Iowa last month for the $100,000 Prairie
Juvenile Mile, where he was made a hot 7-10 favorite. However, Recount could
only finished third after tracking a slow pace.

Private Prospect, who won that Prairie Meadows stakes by a neck, is
undefeated in three outings heading into the Futurity. A debut winner by a
half-length over the Polytrack on June 26, he was claimed for $50,000 out of
that race by trainer Michael Campbell, who saddled him to a 5 1/2-length score
in the 5 1/2-furlong Prairie Gold Juvenile prior to the Prairie Juvenile Mile.

A distant fourth in the latter event was Mr Lightning Boy, an Arlington
graduate on July 3 who adds blinkers for the Futurity. Other maiden scorers in
the Futurity lineup are Seraph, who won on debut by 3 1/4 lengths on dirt at
Indiana Grand, and One Go All Go, who romped by 5 1/4 lengths for a $62,500 tag
at Arlington on August 22.

The field’s only non-winner is Tender May, fourth in his debut on grass
August 16.

Sarah Sis, an 11 3/4-length debut winner at Arlington, and Quality Rocks, who
won at first asking by 4 1/2 lengths at Presque Isle Downs, are among the
favorites in the $100,000

Arlington-Washington Lassie
for fillies, also at seven furlongs.

Also stepping up off maiden wins are local grads Puntsville and Lemon Gala,
and Presque Isle scorer Susan’s Day. Happy to Go, who made a winning debut going
4 1/2 furlongs at Arlington back in May, was subsequently third in the My Dear
and fifth in the Ontario Debutante, both at Woodbine.

The outsider in the Lassie field is Sugar Talk, who defeated Illinois-breds
in modest time first out.
