Dortmund dazzles on Churchill’s ‘Stars of Tomorrow II’
program
Kaleem Shah’s Dortmund stole the show on Saturday’s “Stars of Tomorrow II”
card at Churchill Downs. Although the all-juvenile program featured the Grade 2
Kentucky Jockey Club and Grade 2
Golden Rod for fillies, Dortmund’s
allowance conquest might have made the most lasting impression.
His German name evoking associations with another Shah colorbearer —
Breeders’ Cup Classic star Bayern — the big colt both literally and
figuratively towered over his rivals on Saturday.
The Bob Baffert pupil had been listed at 50-1 on the morning line for Pool 1
of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager, but those odds were already dropping
substantially even before the allowance, and by 8:30 p.m. (EST) that night, he
was down to 16-1.
Dortmund merited inclusion as an individual KDFW interest following his 4
3/4-length debut victory at Santa Anita November 2. The son of 2008 Kentucky
Derby and Preakness-winning champion Big Brown stepped up from 6 1/2 furlongs to
a mile in this entry-level allowance, carded as the 10TH, and the added ground
only served his cause.
The 2-5 favorite, Dortmund broke from the outside post 12 and traveled
powerfully while stalking the pace. Jockey Martin Garcia held onto him as long
as he could, but the chestnut was simply going too well. He readily put his head
in front at the six-furlong mark in 1:10 4/5, and the race was essentially over.
Striding away with authority down the lane, he was 7 3/4 lengths on top in a
smart final time of 1:35 3/5.
Dortmund has toured the sales ring three times. After RNA’ing for $85,000 as
a Keeneland November weanling, he sold for $90,000 as a yearling at Fasig-Tipton
Kentucky July, and brought $140,000 at Fasig-Tipton Midlantic this May. He has
now earned $59,400.
Bred by Emilie Gerlinde Fojan in Kentucky, Dortmund is out of Grade 3-placed
stakes victress Our Josephina, by Tale of the Cat. His third dam is champion
Lakeville Miss, who produced Grade 1 winner Mogambo.
The Wayne Catalano-trained Harlan’s Destiny, by Harlan’s Holiday, took 1:37
1/5 to prevail in the one-mile dirt allowance for fillies. Catalano later sent
out Hidden Danger to break his maiden. Showing the resilience of his sire Tiznow,
Hidden Danger regained command by a half-length and finished 6 1/2 furlongs in
1:19. Crowning the productive day for the Catalano barn was unbeaten West Coast
Belle in the aforementioned Golden Rod.
Trainer Dale Romans also registered a three-win day, including both
six-furlong allowances. Taylor S, a daughter of Medaglia d’Oro and Grade 3
winner Miss Macy Sue, romped by 6 1/4 front-running lengths in a brisk 1:09 1/5.
Toasting Master, a Congrats half-brother to graded winners Broadway’s Alibi and
Golden Lad, also set the pace and just held on to clock 1:11. In addition,
Birdatthewire rallied to a 1 1/2-length score in a fillies’ maiden, and the
Summer Bird filly completed 1 1/16 miles in 1:45.
Moon Medal racked up another win on the program for sire Medaglia d’Oro. The
Brian Lynch filly closed from well back off a fast pace to prevail by 1 1/4
lengths, and negotiated the 6 1/2-furlong maiden in 1:18 1/5.
Curlino, a Curlin half-brother to multiple Grade 3 winner The Pamplemousse,
rolled in the open 1 1/16-mile maiden. Trained by Mark Casse, he chased the slow
early pace and surged 2 3/4 lengths clear in a final time of 1:47.
Trainer Mike Maker won both turf maidens by daylight. Task Force Glory, a
Badge of Silver colt, stayed on strongly to take the nine-furlong maiden by 3
3/4 lengths and posted a time of 1:53 1/5. The Exchange Rate filly Sweeter Than
Ever pulled 3 1/4 lengths clear in her maiden, finishing the mile in 1:40 4/5.
