Hero Look, Sound of Freedom give Scuderia Effevi rare
double

Italian champion owner Scuderia Effevi completed a rare double Sunday,
winning the Premio Parioli (Ity-G3) and the Premio Regina Elena (Ity-G3) — the
country’s Two Thousand and One Thousand Guineas.

The accomplishment is made more important by the fact that the colt, Hero
Look (Lope De Vega), and the filly, Sound of Freedom (Duke of Marmalade), are
both trained in Italy by Stefano Botti. The last owner to score a Guineas double
with horses trained at home was Razza Spineta in 1971 (Adelaide Adams and
Arnaldo Da Brescia).

The juvenile champion Hero Look lost his first race after three wins
(including the Gran Criterium [Ity-G2]) when disqualified by the stewards in his
comeback three weeks ago at Capannelle. He settled well tracking the soft pace
set by Winklemann (Rip Van Winkle) Sunday and found a gap in the last 500
meters. He kicked for home strongly and crossed the line 1 1/2 lengths in front
of Azari (Azamour), who finished fast from the back, and General Sherman
(Teofilo), who was outsprinted in the last 200 meters.

“He did his job well and is a brilliant horse,” said Botti. “He is entered in
some good races abroad and we have to decide where and when he will run. He is a
miler.”

The unbeaten Sound of Freedom was more brilliant than her stablemate, Hero
Look, in the Premio Regina Elena. The chestnut filly, who snatched her first
stakes win three weeks ago in the Premio Seregno, pressed the pacesetter, Kocna
(Aussie Rules), and ran on well. She strolled home four lengths clear of Anchise
(Echo of Light), who ran very well, closing fast despite a terrible draw in 14.
Kocna also stayed on bravely.

Sound of Freedom has an ambitious target.

“I know that owner Felice Villa dreams of winning the Italian Derby (Ity-G2)
with a filly, and Sound of Freedom could be the right one,” Botti said. “She is
very relaxed, has a strong attitude and can stay the 2200 meters. We will sit
around a table and think seriously about it.
