Initially trained by Richard Hannon in England, Spirit of Xian was a debut
winner over five furlongs at Newmarket last April. The bay was unable to garner
black type during her juvenile campaign in Europe, finishing fourth in the
aforementioned Naas Fillies’ Sprint, sixth in both the Prix du Bois (Fr-G3) and
Molecomb (G3), and seventh in the St. Hugh’s. Her sights were lowered for a
conditions race at Chester August 30, and she responded with a 4 1/2-length
rout. Back up in class for the September 20 Firth of Clyde (Eng-G3), however,
she was 11th from a poor draw.
Spirit of Xian shipped stateside and joined her Hall of Fame trainer at Santa
Anita. A troubled but closing third in her U.S. debut in the February 14 Sweet
Life on the downhill course, she turned over a new tactical leaf here. Her first
stakes coup advanced her scorecard to 10-3-0-2, $134,043.
Bred by B. Kennedy in Ireland, Spirit of Xian brought $38,669 as a
Tattersalls December weanling, but commanded $156,239 as a Goffs Orby yearling.
She was produced by the Touch Gold mare Gold Again.
