Palace Malice to point for Met Mile after Westchester
scratch
Palace Malice (Curlin) will not run in Saturday’s $150,000 Westchester (G3)
at Belmont Park due to a bruised right front foot.
“We’re distressed about it, of course, but it is not serious,” owner Cot
Campbell said. “The plan is to move onto the Metropolitan H. (G1)”
The withdrawal of Palace Malice leaves the one-mile Westchester, the
traditional prep for the Met Mile, with a field of four, headed by 2014 Belmont
S. (G1) winner Tonalist (Tapit) as the heavy favorite. There will be no show
wagering on the Westchester.
Palace Malice had not raced since finishing sixth in the Whitney (G1) last
August. Prior to that, Palace Malice won the Gulfstream Park H. (G2), the New
Orleans H. (G1), the 2014 edition of the Westchester and the Met Mile. As a
three-year-old he won the Belmont S. and Jim Dandy (G2).
“It’s a shame, because with the exception of Tonalist, the Westchester seemed
like a good place to bring him back,” Campbell said.
