Keeplaffinleslie, second in her unveiling June 6, promptly opened her account
next time in Saturday’s
6TH
race at Woodbine and thereby became the first winner sired by Grade 1 hero
Victor’s Cry (Street Cry). Owned by Brian Broughton and J.R. Racing Stable, the
5-2 favorite survived a pace war and drew a length clear with Emma-Jayne Wilson.
The John Ross juvenile completed the 4 1/2-furlong dash for Ontario-breds in :52
1/5 on the Polytrack.
Bred by Domenic Triumbari, Keeplaffinleslie was purchased for $18,404 at the
CTHS Canadian Premier Yearling Sale in Ontario last September. The dark bay was
produced by the stakes-placed Kaleidoscope Kerry (One Way Love).
Victor’s Cry set a track record in his maiden win at Del Mar in 2008,
speeding 6 1/2 furlongs on the Polytrack in 1:15.82. But he later developed into
a leading turf miler on the Southern California circuit for Eoin Harty.
Known for doing his best work late, Victor’s Cry got up in time to garner the
2010 Shoemaker Mile (G1) and also rolled to an emphatic score in that season’s
Citation H. (G2). His placings include the Eddie Read (G1), San Simeon H. (G3),
Thunder Road H. (G3) and the 2011 Shoemaker Mile as defending champion. That was
his only race after returning home from an attempt at the Dubai Duty Free
(UAE-G1), where he had finished a creditable fifth of 16.
Victor’s Cry, who retired with a mark of 24-6-3-4, $762,021, is out of the
Grade 2-placed Clever Trick mare Short Time. He is a half-brother to Grade
3-placed Clever Strike (Smart Strike) and to For Passion (Not for Love), the dam
of recent Singletary S. romper Soul Driver (Street Boss). Victor’s Cry counts as
his second dam Chilean champion and classic winner Maria Fumata (Semenenko).
The 10-year-old stallion stands under the Spendthrift banner at Park Stud
near Orangeville, Ontario, for C$3,500, stands and nurses.
