The lightly raced German raider Lovelyn (Tiger Hill), who opened her account
in a maiden at Koln April 19, provided a third win in the Italian Oaks (Ity-G2)
to her trainer Peter Schiergen, who previously landed the classic with the
champion and1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Fr-G1) winner Danedream and Goose Bay.
The Gestut Ittlingen homebred was in trouble for a while when the favorite,
Joyful Hope (Shamardal), forced the pace at the 600-meter pole and challenged
the front runner Reset in Blue (Fastnet Rock). Entering the last furlong, Joyful
Hope finally overtook Reset in Blue while Lovelyn found her way switching
outside just before Full of Beauty (Motivator) made her move. Joyful Hope got a
bit tired in the last 50 meters and Lovelyn had an extra kick to prevail by a
head over the favorite and Full of Beauty, who dead-heated for second.
“She traveled well and started to stay on when the fillies in front of me got
tired,” said jockey Robert Havlin, who landed his second Italian classic after
the Derby in 2012 with Feuerblitz. “She is a good filly and will stay further.”
Schiergen added, “I was worried in the last two furlongs because she is a big
filly and needs a clear path. I think it isn’t fair to compare Lovelyn with
Danedream, but she is a nice filly with room for improvement. I train also
Nightflower (Dylan Thomas), who won the Diana Trial (Ger-G2), and Lovelyn is
about in the same league. The Preis der Diana (Ger-G1) is the obvious target for
her.”
Lovelyn is from a top-class female line developed by Gestut Ittlingen. Her
dam, Laurella (Acatenango) — who already produced the Group 3-placed Labrice (Dubawi)
— is a full sister to the champion Lando, who topped his career landing the
Japan Cup (Jpn-G1) after he won the Deutsches Derby (Ger-G1), the Grosser Preis
von Baden (Ger-G1) twice and three other Group 1s, as well as Deutsches Derby
winner Laroche (Nebos).
