New Bay ruled out of Eclipse; Karpino misses Deutsches
Derby

A clash of Derby winners Golden Horn (Cape Cross) and New Bay (Dubawi) in
Saturday’s Eclipse (Eng-G1) will not materialize after New Bay, the Prix du
Jockey Club (French Derby) (Fr-G1) winner, failed to satisfy trainer Andre Fabre
in a work Monday.

“Andre Fabre has reported that New Bay did not work well enough this morning
to justify going to Sandown for the Eclipse S.,” said owner-breeder Khalid
Abdullah’s Racing Manager Teddy Grimthorpe. “He will now wait and look at the
various other options.”

New Bay’s defection has left five in the Eclipse, with Golden Horn being the
only three-year-old, and trainer John Gosden said the Anthony Oppenheimer
colorbearer worked well on the weekend.

“Frankie (Dettori) was thrilled with his work on Saturday morning,” the
conditioner told At The Races. “He did a lovely seven furlongs on the watered
gallop with a good older horse rated 118 and he skipped clear of him. He’s in
good order and at the moment, touch wood, he’s going the right way.”

The four others remaining in the Eclipse are Golden Horn’s stablemate Western
Hymn (High Chaparral); dual Group 1 winner The Grey Gatsby (Mastercraftsman);
the Aidan O’Brien-trained Cougar Mountain (Fastnet Rock); and Andrew Balding’s
Tullius (Le Vie Dei Colori).

In another disappointing bulletin, Qatar Racing’s unbeaten
Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen (German Two Thousand Guineas) (Ger-G2) winner Karpino (Cape
Cross) has been ruled out of Sunday’s Deutsches Derby (Ger-G1) after sustaining
an injury Monday.

Trainer Andreas Wohler said he thinks the injury is not serious, but was
unable to give a timeline for the colt’s return to the races. Karpino is also
entered in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. (Eng-G1) at Ascot July 25.

“We’ve taken him out of the German Derby,” Wohler confirmed. “He had an
injury this morning. It’s nothing serious, hopefully, and we’ll see. We’ll just
have to see how everything works. It’s hard to say if he will make Ascot. We’ll
have to see how the next couple of days are.”
