Paddy O’Prado’s first winner comes on Gulfstream dirt

Last updated: 6/25/15 4:14 PM

Turf star Paddy O’Prado (El Prado) recorded his first winner as a freshman
sire when the aptly named Shesthewinner prevailed in Thursday’s
5TH
race at Gulfstream Park — not on the grass, but on dirt.

Trained by Gennadi Dorochenko for Raut LLC, the 24-1 longshot belied her
inexperience as a debutante. The dark bay bravely squeezed through, responding
to jockey Octavio Vergara Jr., to get up by a neck in the $35,000 maiden
claimer. Shesthewinner finished five furlongs in 1:01 2/5 on the fast track.

Shesthewinner was bred in Kentucky by Machmer Hall. After selling for $30,000
as a weanling at Keeneland November, she brought just $3,000 as a September
yearling. Shesthewinner is out of the multiple stakes-placed White She Devil
(Vicar), who is herself a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Headache (Tapit).

Paddy O’Prado was the top turf sophomore of 2010, sweeping the lucrative
Secretariat (G1), Virginia Derby (G2) and Colonial Turf Cup (G2) that summer.
The Dale Romans charge, who broke his maiden in the Palm Beach (G3), proved his
surface versatility with a runner-up effort in the Blue Grass (G1) on
Keeneland’s old Polytrack and a fine third in the Kentucky Derby (G1).

The Donegal Racing colorbearer would have loomed large in the Breeders’ Cup
Turf (G1). Connections opted for a bold bid for the Classic (G1), however, and
he checked in fifth to Blame and Zenyatta.

Reappearing in the 2011 Dixie (G2), Paddy O’Prado rallied from last to win
well, firing expectations for a big four-year-old campaign. Unfortunately, the
gray exited the race with a career-ending sesamoid injury. He retired with a
record of 15-5-3-3, including a fast-finishing third in the With Anticipation
(G3) as a juvenile, and $1,721,297 in earnings.

Like his half-sister, 2014 champion three-year-old filly Untapable (Tapit),
Paddy O’Prado was bred by Winchell Thoroughbreds. Their dam, Grade 2 heroine Fun
House (Prized), is a half-sister to Grade 2-winning sire Early Flyer (Gilded
Time). This is the prolific family of Grade 1 scorers Olympio (Naskra), Tapizar
(Tapit), Pyro (Pulpit) and Cuvee (Carson City).

The eight-year-old Paddy O’Prado stands at Spendthrift Farm near Lexington,
Kentucky, for $9,500, stands and nurses.
