California Chrome returns a winner; Baffert goes one-two in
Sham
Everyone has been anticipating Horse of the Year
California Chrome’s return to competition and the popular chestnut did not
disappoint on Saturday at Santa Anita Park when scoring in the San Pasqual S.
(G2).
Also at Santa Anita,
Collected and Let’s Meet in Rio ran one-two for trainer Bob Baffert in the
$100,750 Sham (G3), a one-mile Kentucky Derby (G1) prep. Collected earned 10
qualifying points as part of the Road to the Kentucky Derby series.
Gulfstream offered a trio of graded stakes and
Mshawish showed his versatility in the Hal’s Hope (G3), recording his first dirt
win in the one-mile event. Front-runners captured both turf events, with
Heart to Heart & Sandiva using their early speed to capitalize in the Ft.
Lauderdale (G2) and Marshua’s River (G3).
La Verdad, a finalist for champion female sprinter,
posted an easy win in the Interborough at Aqueduct and Fast Flying Rumor
registered an upset in the Turf Dash at Tampa Bay Downs, with heavy favorite
Power Alert winding up a non-threatening second.
