Gulch, the oldest living Breeders’ Cup champion, was euthanized Sunday morning
due to complications from cancer. The 1988 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1)
champion and Eclipse Award winner was pensioned to Old Friends Farm in
Georgetown, Kentucky, in 2009.
Mo Tom and Tom’s Ready, the respective one-two in Saturday’s Lecomte S. (G3) at
Fair Grounds, exited that race in good order and are expected to rematch in the
Risen Star S. (G2) on February 20 back at the New Orleans oval.
Nyquist, honored as champion two-year-old male of 2015 at Saturday evening’s
Eclipse Award ceremony, worked five furlongs in 1:00.80 at Santa Anita Park on
Sunday morning. Also readying for his sophomore bow at Santa Anita was Los
Alamitos Futurity (G1) victor Mor Spirit, who clocked the same distance in 1:01.
At Aqueduct on Sunday, an interestingly marked filly named
Constellation romped by 10 lengths in the Ruthless S. under Irad Ortiz Jr.
Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and both Aqueduct and Santa Anita Park
have carded graded races to commemorate the day.
Aqueduct hosts the Toboggan S. (G3) while Santa Anita Park puts on its newly
upgraded Megahertz S. (G3).
