Champion Tepin returns in Endeavour; California Derby
rematch on tap in El Camino Real Derby
Tepin soundly defeated the boys in the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1), and on
Saturday the Eclipse Award-winning champion turf mare returns to action in the
Endeavour (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs. A pair of
Triple Crown nominees — Gettysburg and Destin — will attempt to steal some of
the spotlight as they line up in the Sam F. Davis (G3) earlier on the card.
Sophomore will also take center stage at Golden Gate Fields on Saturday as they
vie for Kentucky Derby (G1) points in the El Camino Real Derby (G3).
Included in that 14-strong group are the top three finishers from the California
Derby — Frank Conversation, Marqula and Algenon.
Gulfstream and Santa Anita Park will each host a distaff race scheduled at 1
1/16 miles. The Royal Delta (G2) at Gulfstream drew a field of six while
Santa Anita’s Santa Maria (G2) attracted eight runners. Santa Anita also hosts
the Arcadia (G2) on Saturday, featuring Obviously, Om and Bolo.
Also on Wednesday,
jockey Ramon Dominguez was unanimously made eligible for Hall of Fame
consideration beginning in 2016.
John Mucciolo praised Songbird’s return victory in his
Santa Anita Notebook and tabbed Governor Malibu as a horse to watch in the
Aqueduct Notebook.
