Mohaymen tops six-horse Fountain of Youth

Mohaymen, the top-ranked Kentucky Derby (G1) contender on the East Coast and
unbeaten in four starts,

tops a field of six entered in Saturday’s $400,000 Fountain of Youth (G2) at
Gulfstream Park
, which offers points on a 50-20-10-5 scale to the top four
finishers.

Cathryn Sophia, a rising star in the 3-year-old filly ranks, is

the filly to beat in Saturday’s $200,000 Davona Dale (G2) at Gulfstream
. The
Kentucky Oaks (G1) contender will stretch out to a mile against six rivals.
Besides the featured Fountain of Youth and Davona Dale, the $100,000 Gulfstream
Park Sprint (G3) will also be held on the main track Saturday and X Y Jet will
bring a four-race win streak into the 6 1/2-furlong test. The up-and-coming
sprinter is prepping for a planned start in the Dubai Golden Sheen (G1) at
Meydan next month.



Gulfstream will also offer a quartet of turf stakes
. Breeders’ Cup Juvenile
Fillies Turf (G1) winner Catch a Glimpse will return to the races in the
Herecomesthebride (G3). Ft. Lauderdale (G2) scorer Heart to Heart heads a group
of nine older horses in the Canadian Turf (G3). And the Palm Beach (G3) and Sand
Springs both shape up as good betting races with large and competitive fields.

Victor Espinoza, the regular rider of the last two Horse of the Years,
California Chrome and American Pharaoh,

was named the 2016 George Woolf Memorial Award winner
.

Timber Country, the 1994 champion juvenile and 1995 Preakness winner,

died this week in Japan at the age of 24
.

War Emblem returned from Japan to the United States last fall to spend his
remaining days at Old Friends Retirement Farm in Georgetown, Kentucky, and the

2005 Kentucky Derby winner has been gelded to comply with state, federal import
regulations
.
