Hip No. 109, a dark bay colt by Malibu Moon, brought the top price of $675,000 from West Point Thoroughbreds and Spendthrift Farm to top Wednesday’s Barretts March Select Two-Year-Old in Training Sale.
Consigned by Starting Point Thoroughbreds, agent, the Kentucky-bred colt is out of the multiple stakes-winning Indian Charlie mare Indian Breeze and comes from the same female family as Grade 1-scoring sire Star Choice.
The sale topper breezed a quarter in :21 at the training preview on Monday. He previously sold for $135,000 as a Keeneland September yearling.
A Candy Ride colt brought the second highest price of $400,000 when going to Susumu Hayashi. Consigned as Hip 102 by Kings Equine, agent, the Kentucky-bred is out of the winning Indian Charlie mare Gottahaveadream, who is a half-sister to Grade 1 victor Here Comes Ben.
The colt’s third dam is Grade 1 vixen Race the Wild Wind and his female family also includes Grade 1 heroes Albertus Maximus and Daredevil.
The dark bay colt, who breezed a furlong in :10 during Monday’s training preview, brought $100,000 as a Keeneland September yearling.
The highest-priced filly during Wednesday’s sale also earned the bullet for the fastest furlong at the training preview on Monday. Hip 6, CALIFORNIABYANOSE, blazed in :9 4/5 for consigner Havens Bloodstock Agency Inc., agent.
Dennis O’Neil went to $360,000 to secure not only the Lucky Pulpit filly but also Hip 121, a bay son of Congrats. The filly is out of the Mr. Greeley mare Nine to Five Lady and counts as her third dam Grade 1 winner Fara’s Team, who is best known for producing Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) conqueror and sire Concern.
The California-bred chestnut miss RNAed for $14,000 as a Northern California-bred August yearling before selling for $42,000 as a Barretts October yearling last year.
For Wednesday’s sale, 45 juveniles were purchased for $6,777,000 at an average of $150,600 and a median of $100,000. The gross increased 26.5 percent over the $5,356,000 brought in last year for 43 two-year-olds. The average jumped 20.9 percent over the 2016 average of $124,558, while the median remained the same.
