Multiple Grade 2 star and track record-setter Fed Biz registered his first winner as a freshman sire Saturday when Market Bubble scored in his debut at Belmont Park.
Trained by Alan Goldberg for Colts Neck Stables, Market Bubble was dispatched as the nearly 3-1 third choice in the turf sprint maiden for New York-breds. The 3-2 favorite, The Postmaster, had the benefit of experience after a third-place effort in his unveiling, and spurted clear after setting fractions of :23.51 and :46.81 on the firm inner turf.
But Market Bubble got in gear late for Junior Alvarado, erasing a 2 1/2-length deficit in the final furlong to nab the leader by a half-length. The winner, who rattled off a last eighth in :11 and change, completed six furlongs in 1:09.90. There was a 3 1/2-length gap back to third-placer Plebe.
Bred by Gallagher’s Stud, Market Bubble initially sold to De Meric Stables for $185,000 at Fasig-Tipton’s New York-bred sale. The pinhook success reeled off a quarter in :21 1/5 at the OBS March under tack show, equaling the session’s fastest time, before commanding $375,000.
The cleverly named Market Bubble was produced by the winning Tulipmania, an Empire Maker half-sister to Grade 2 hero Straight Story (also a Colts Neck runner) and multiple Japanese stakes scorer Strong Souther. Market Bubble’s second dam, New York-bred stakes victress and Grade 2-placed Eventail, is herself a half-sister to multiple Grade 1 winner and Broodmare of the Year Take Charge Lady, dam of champion Will Take Charge and Grade 1 scorer Take Charge Indy.
Fed Biz, a $950,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase by Kaleem Shah, sports a royal pedigree as a son of Giant’s Causeway from the family of transatlantic champion Johannesburg and Pulpit. His dam, the stakes-winning Wild Again mare Spunoutacontrol, factors as the second dam of four stakes victors, most significantly Grade 1 sprinter Joking.
Three of Fed Biz’s four stakes wins came over Del Mar’s old Polytrack – the 2013 Pat O’Brien (G2) in a track-record 1:21.12 for seven furlongs, the 2014 San Diego (G2) in a 1 1/16-mile mark of 1:41.00, and the 2012 El Cajon. But he also won three times on the Santa Anita dirt, highlighted by a victory in the 2013 San Fernando (G2), and he missed by a neck to Shared Belief in the 2014 Awesome Again (G1). His other stakes placings include the Frank E. Kilroe Mile (G1) and Thunder Road on turf as well as the Indiana Derby (G2), Strub (G2), and Pat O’Brien as the defending champion.
Retired with $770,496 in earnings from a record of 19-6-3-3, Fed Biz stands for a $10,000 fee, stands and nurses, at WinStar Farm near Versailles, Kentucky.
