Peter Redekop B. C. Ltd.’s Anothertiwstafate broke best and went straight to the lead in Saturday’s $101,800 El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields. The Blaine Wright trainee would never be headed in posting a seven-length romp in the Road to the Kentucky Derby event.
The race was worth 10-4-2-1 points to the respective top four finishers towards a starting berth in the May 4 Kentucky Derby (G1) at Churchill Downs.
Sent postward as the 6-5 betting favorite, Anothertwistafate had company early from 9-5 second choice Kingly. He was a head clear after an opening quarter-mile in :23.38, one length ahead following four furlongs in :49.09 and a half-length in control as six panels went in 1:13.78.
Jockey Juan Hernandez asked the colt for more at the top of the lane and he responded in fine fashion, easily opening up a big edge that was maintained to the wire. Anothertwistafate finished off 1 1/8 miles on the all-weather Tapeta in 1:50.38.
Kingly, who scratched from the Risen Star Stakes (G2) which took place at Fair Grounds not long after the El Camino Real Derby, garnered runner-up honors while 2 1/2 lengths clear of 10-1 fourth choice More Ice, who rallied from off the pace to get a stakes placing.
Anothertwistafate improved his lifetime mark to 4-3-0-0 with earnings of $94,545 following his initial stakes triumph. He was bred in the Bluegrass State by Pursuit of Success LLC.
