The silks of Klaravich Stables and William H. Lawrence are easily recognizable for any North American racing fan, and the powerhouse partnership netted its first Eclipse Award for outstanding owner in 2019.
Seth Klarman formed Klaravich Stables in 1993. About a decade later, Klarman joined forces with William Lawrence to buy and race horses in partnership. Many of their horses have a financial angle to their names, with Klarman running a successful hedge fund and Lawrence being the CEO of Meridian Capital Partners.
Klaravich and Lawrence led all owners in earnings ($8,178,845) in 2019. Horse of the Year Bricks and Mortar was the star performer, winning major prizes like the Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) and Arlington Million (G1) during a perfect 6-for-6 season.
Other notable horses included Sword Dancer (G1) winner Annals of Time and Grade 2 scorer Focus Group.
The balloting wasn’t close, with Klaravich and Lawrence receiving 166 more first-place votes than the runner-up.
