The closing of Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 2 and the Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager provided a burst of Thanksgiving-week intrigue for Derby-focused horseplayers.
As was the case in Pool 1, the “All other colts and geldings from the 2020 foal crop” option closed as an odds-on favorite, settling at 0.84-1. But whereas in Pool 1 the exciting maiden winner Extra Anejo closed as the individual favorite over two-time Grade 1 winner Forte, the tables were turned in Pool 2. Having since added the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) to his decorated resume, Forte closed as the 10-1 individual favorite in Pool 2, with Extra Anejo drifting slightly to 13-1.
Loggins, a close runner-up behind Forte in the Breeders’ Futurity (G1), wound up as the fourth choice overall at 19-1. Giant Mischief (27-1), Signator (27-1), and “All fillies from the 2020 foal crop” (29-1) were the only others to close under 30-1.

The Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager produced a much narrower gap between the two favorites. “All other sires” narrowly drew the most support at odds of 5-1, but individual favorite Into Mischief—on his way to a fourth consecutive title as North America’s leading sire—wasn’t far behind at 7-1.
Violence, the sire of Forte, settled as the third choice at 11-1. Gun Runner (12-1), Uncle Mo (13-1), Curlin (16-1), Justify (16-1), Tapit (17-1), Bolt d’Oro (18-1), Ghostzapper (19-1), and Quality Road (19-1) comprised a cluster of well-regarded stallions closing at under 20-1.

Only one Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager pool is offered each year, but there are six Kentucky Derby Future Wager pools slated in advance of the 2023 Kentucky Derby. The next is Pool 3, scheduled for Jan. 20-22.
