Denes and Woelfel’s GORGEOUS GOOSE (Mongoose) swooped past odds-on favorite
Diamond Diva (GB) (Dansili [GB]) inside the final furlong to register an 11-1
upset of Saturday’s $100,000
Wilshire
H. (G3) at Hollywood Park. Under Corey Nakatani, the Mike Puype-trained
filly prevailed by three parts of a length and finished one mile on the firm
turf in 1:34 2/5. She returned $25.80, $8.80 and $5.20 while keying the $1
exotics of $46.30 (exacta), $425 (trifecta) and $1,507.70 (7-1-6-9 superfecta).
Diamond Diva, making her first start since winning the CashCall Mile
Invitational (G2) last July, settled for second and returned $2.80 and $2.60.
Another longshot, Charming Legacy (Ire) (Danehill), was another three-quarters of
a length back in third and paid $5.20 at 12-1. Next under the line were Bel Air
Sizzle (Unusual Heat), Belmont Cat (NZ) (Felix the Cat), Miss Singhsix (Ire)
(Singspiel [Ire]), Kayd Kodaun (Ire) (Traditionally), Tizfiz (Tiznow) and In My
Glory (Honour and Glory).
Winning for the first time in stakes company since taking the 2007 Blue
Norther S. at the end of her juvenile season, Gorgeous Goose had placed only
once previously in graded company, that being a photo-finish second in the Harold C. Ramser
Sr. H. (G3) last October. The gray has now bankrolled $223,574 from a line of
14-4-1-2.
Bred in Florida by her owners, Gorgeous Goose was produced by the unraced
Gorgeous Me (Big Spruce) and has an unnamed yearling half-brother by Double
Honor.
